Hey so after a while around coins I have found my favorite...Seated Series Quarters and Halves especially, but the dimes, and half dimes, are great too.... Now..I really do want to complete one of these series (in nice condition, I don't want fillers, or culls) I would like to attempt the Quarters Just because they are a little larger making the designs a little easier to see with the naked eye....but in your opinion should I attempt such a series? and which one
If you want to, then go for it. I do not know they keys or how tough they are to find, but a complete set would be cool. Are you talking date or date and mint?
Okay, great question. Look at the mintages for the end of the series for the quarters. [from 1879 to 1891, including the few mintmarked dates] You will be amazed at the numbers. I do have one: 1883, mintage of 15,439. I was able to grab it in 2003, and have never seen another. The same with the 1869 S, mintage of 76,000. Neat dates, but really tough. As for the dimes, you may be able to get farther, but... there are many dates with mintages far below one million. If you are patient, then it may be doable. but--- Be patient. and good luck.
Frank said it all.. Patience will be the key to completing these series... If you want them, go for it... Get a set raw, or slabbed if you like. Me, personally, I wouldn't be crossing from raw and slabbed... I either want a raw set, or slabbed set I do not know of the keys, but, I can tell you, that a lot of these coins get expensive in upper grades, so be patient and save up your money, with coins like this, I'd want quality
1st Welcome I am also a Seated collector mainly Dime.I know the seller and he is reasonable and honest. 1876 Seated Dime on ebay Item # 160339497946
All the seated series are a real challenge to finish. They are long series, and finding original coins isn't easy. That said, I'd be darn sure you are able (financially) to finish the series -- so study the prices of the entire series before you decide to jump in with both feed.
Tough indeed. Eveybody knows the Red Book and PCGS prices are off; no one uses them for a hard price at a show. But here's a case where standard price guides are helpful; even a SWAG (scientific wild-@$$ guess) can be very enlightening. So here is the link for the PCGS prices for Liberty Seated 25c : http://www.pcgs.com/prices/PriceGuideDetail.aspx?MS=1&PR=1&c=109&title=Liberty+Seated+Quarter One instantly sees the Carson City coins are killers. There are several other toughies, including some S-mints. You could even select the entire table, cut and paste into Excel, and total up each column. That gives you an estimate of what of takes to complete for any given grade. Many, many thousands. I'm not saying "don't do it". I'm just saying it is quite an achievement to complete one of these.
i love sl's, but completing any of them will take time and a good bit of money (to me) a good site for sl dime info.........good luck............ http://www.seateddimevarieties.com
Very true, and these are some of the thoughts that went through my head...I'm on a low budget...but i have the time to wait to get the coins, but still I am really debating dimes or quarters...Dimes a little easier financially, yet the quarters look so much nicer with the eagle on the back
Here's one thing which helps : what do you consider "complete" ? Do you really need every date and mint ? For example - a "complete" Morgan set becomes fairly reasonable if you get just one of each year, regardless of mint. Same with Seated Libs. What's more is you can collect them and enjoy them from the perspective of having several really good ones, and buy / sell / trade. Over time you will have handled many, many of them and acquired much expertise. You never had a complete set at any given time, but handled a (nearly) complete set over the years. Plus the ones you hang on to are the really exceptional ones ! Just a thought...
P,D,S,CC I would love a COMPLETE set, I just really and debating which one would be more beneficial in the long run... and if the cost difference is worth the quarter vs. dime vs. half dime
If you want to do quarters then do quarters. I'm working on a Morgan Dollar set...all dates and all mints. Some of those are very expensive too but I have a whole lifetime to complete it.
Good thing we are working on the same set... Now I KNOW I have some cointalk competition! LOL Just like camaro said, collect the quarters, if you want the quarters... Do what you want, and don't get too influenced by what others say
LOL, I have been working on Morgan's for on and off about 12 years now. It's not too far along though.
Either of the series you mentioned will be tough to find some key dates in affordable prices for the average collector. Might I suggest that before embarking on either, you gather as much reading material on these and perhaps you will be better to define which has your most interest. There is some really great reference material available in the Literature Auctions, online reference, and perhaps some local coin clubs dedicated to a specific series. Good Luck and have fun learning. It's a great adventure.
