flea market large cent

    not sure if it was a good buy...but 30.00 for my first large cent.

    Value aside - you need to get the verdigris off the coin to prevent further damage as it WILL spread.

    It's the green stuff. It is the corrosion that forms on copper - it will literally eat up the coin.

    I guess it's a matter of which is better:

    1) do nothing until the coin crumbles away to dust

    2) 'clean' it to remove the green stuff preventing further corrosion

    I'll give it a whirl. I'll post pics of the process once I get started.

    Yeah, it will harm the coin, but it MUST be done or the corrosion will hurt the coin even more. :(
