I received a set today with about an inch crack over the right side of the quarter case . I really dont want to send it back. Will this really affect value a lot?
I'd say hogwash...it won't lower the value...what are you buying...the coins or the packing?? Speedy ps--GDJMSP...I didn't mean hogwash to you --I think you know what I mean
Well, I'd agree with ya Speedy if you were planning on removing the coins from the set. But with Proof sets, mint sets and the like - packaging counts. Like it or not. And yeah I knew what ya meant
I think I mentioned in an earlier post that three of my plastic holders were cracked, out of the two proof sets purchased. Without thinking I tore up, and threw away the paperwork. So, now I'm thinking I'll just keep the sets and tolerate the cracks. I bought them to admire, and they will go to my oldest son one day. So, if anybody loses the value, I guess it will be him. However, like me, I think he collects for the pleasure of collecting, and not the hope of turning a profit.
---and I guess I'll agree with you...I look at the packing too when buying... I thought you would but wanted to make sure ;--) Speedy
The proof set cases I don't think are airtight...so it should matter much...I think at the most the coins would tone or get some haze. Speedy
We had some discussion before about enclosing coins or sets into food vacuum seal pouches. I'm still thinking about that; I saw a vacuum sealer in the store last week.
I have to agree. Id pay more for a set with pristine packaging over one that was damaged. If I were buying a set in some presentation packaging, Id expect it to be as perfect as the coins. Pesonally Id return the item if I werent planning on removing them.
I agree with buying the coin not the packaging. Unfortunately, alot of people are into the packaging, so as others have said, that is a consideration unless you are just going to take them out. I have seen proof sets with cracks that caused the coins to tone only below the cracks...and that is ugly IMO. Proof sets aren't airtite, but the crack is less airtite then the less, if that makes any sense. I would either send them back or crack them out.
