I try to imagine the same question being asked about the 1793 "Large Cent" ...in 1854. Of course, it was still just called a "Cent" in 1854.
I keep these well circulated nickels in a tube for future gifts for young collectors who are looking to fill holes in their album of Jefferson Nickels. You never know, you may have a chance to influence a young coin collector learn the joy of coin roll hunting, building a collection, learning about American history / presidents, etc. No, not worth selling, but definitely worth saving for that future opportunity to teach / mentor IMHO.
176,999,158 minted, so not much more added value due to condition, but you asked "worth to collector". A great answer was provided by @runninghorse1.
I started in 1948 and saved a bunch of all coins as extras for trading. They are now being used to give to my great grandchildren.
Business strike Jefferson nickels need to be in uncirculated condition and have full steps, or be some sort of variety, to be worth anything. I got mine for about $1.
Stop what? Just because something's older doesn't mean it's worth more. I realize that every morning when I look in the mirror! Lol!
I agree with both of you,Jefferson nickels are the perfect set for the entry level collector, most can be found coin roll hunting ,only a couple of key dates that can be otained quite reasonably, actually down rite affordable! I would encourage any new collector to do a set of Jeff,s
hey Rayrayford2 i wish i could tell you it was worth a lot but i cant bud. its worth about 5 cents. the Jefferson nickel is a great coin to start a collection for any age i think. there's still coins from the 40's,50's and 60's in circulation. im 100% sure of this because i just deposited them into circulation at my bank. i like putting coins like that into circulation hoping new and old collectors will come across them. do any of yawl do this?
I need to "take a number," make a phone call and "request an appointment" to deposit coins, so I will hang on to them until this Covid seige has run its course, unless the new strains perpetuate this semi-freedom of access, in which case, I will bury plastic jars in the NYC Parks for @paddyman98 to detect.
