question about $2 bills

I guess I am pretty lucky. I was at one of the local branches of my bank, and when I asked the Head Teller if he had any new bills he apologized, saying he only had new $1, $2, $5, and $10, and has a hard time getting $20, $50 and $100 bills. I asked him if I could get some fives and tens, and he pulled out a full banded stack of each. That was a bit out of my budget, so I had him pull four of each bill for me--enough to fill a binder sleeve. I think I'll get some $2 bills the next time I go. They don't normally stock them--they special ordered them for a customer for a charity event.

Also lucky for me, a few other collectors have gotten them used to these requests. When I asked him for nickels, he told me the other collectors make marks on their rolls, so they don't get the same ones back, and I would know which have already been picked through. I am trying to complete a Jefferson set from circulation, though it looks like it may be tough--the oldest I have found so far is a 1941.

I have very few US notes in my collection since I live outside USA and I would like to know just how rare are typical $2 notes 'cause some people said they are harder to find than notes of other values- is this true?

I don't think they are rare, but it is very uncommon to see them in circulation. You can get them at a bank, if you want to, but hardly anyone does. I have read that about 50,000,000 of the 1996 series were printed.

Personally, I can only recall getting a $2 bill once or twice in the last thirty years--the modern $2 bill was first printed in 1976.

They are not at all rare, but are hard to find if you are not looking for them. In other words, go to the bank and they can probably set you up with as many as you want. They are fun and I try to spend a few now and then.

I even got an old red seal $2 bill last year from the bank. They are great to look at, but well worn it is only worth $2. I will spend it at some point.

Thak you all! I also remeber that there were at least two different deisigns for the $2 notes, one being printed before 1976, the other one after. I think one depics a building of some sort while the other one shows the signing of constitution (that's the one I have).

Yup. The older one had Jefferson's home Monticello on the back (like the nickel).

It's the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the 1976 and later notes. They changed from Monticello in 1976 because that year was the bicentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

I had been bemoaning the fact that I had not obtained a $2 bill on previous visits as I had heard that they were no longer used. However, on holiday in Florida this April I was given one in change (series 2003) buying a guide book in St Augustine - Gap filled.

"Well, my US banking experience is about 35 miles south of Boston."

Boston has a Federal Reserve Bank. If you want new bills, I would hope they should have some.

I just picked up some $2 bills at the bank today. I asked for as many as they had in consecutive sequence (I figured they were more likely to be uncirculated), and got 11. The teller was happy to get rid of them.

I had to get some cash from my bank last week to go on vacation, and just for fun i asked the teller to give me $100 of it in $2 bills... got 50 of them crisp and consecutive!

I ended up trading them to my dad, but i will go back when i get home and grab another hundred ;)

I guess i lucked out with my bank... its a small town bank ( has 4 banks around the area ) I used to bank with wells fargo but hated them, to corporate.

If I ever make it down south I might see if I can get any.

The other day I got 17 crisp and consecutive $2 bills...I put them up for auction at my coin club at face value (34.00..I added a star note to the lot) and the bidded ended at $51.00!!!...

If you got 50 of them you might want to do the same!

I have wondered: Are there actually Series 1996 $2's, or are they really the Series 1995's which were distributed in '96?
