Just for the heck of it I went to the bank on Thursday and bought four rolls of dimes, and I was able to pick out a total of four silver ones- 1955D, 1947P, 1955P, and 1961D. I just always undo the ends of the rolls and carefully slide the paper open and the silver ones in the rolls are always very easy to see compared to the rest. The most recent one in the rolls were 2007 so no luck on finding a 2009 Dime. Im gonna try some nickel and penny rolls this week. I have found an occassional silver nickel here and there but not often. The pennies should be interesting as well.

I've searched through 20 rolls of pennies...NADA!!!:headbang: Only 5 more left in this box...hoping for a miracle now:rolling:

Btw, anyone have any pointers on sorting the 1982's? I know how to spot difference between small and large dates...right now, I've 4 piles of 1982's separated by date and mint-mark respectively. I'm trying to figure out how to distinguish between copper and zinc. I tried a home-made weighing machine (ice-cream bar stick and a pen ....but I can't get the coin to stay on the stick..it rolls off!!:(). Anyone have any ideas on this? I've got too many 1982's...its high time to look through them and fill the holes in my album.

What, are you trying to balance the coins on edge or something? Put 'em flat...

Geez...I didn't think of that! :D Come on...I'm putting them flat...but the coin slides (not rolls) off the stick!

    Get you one of these:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-0-01-Gram-D...id=p4634.c0.m14&_trkparms=|301:1|293:1|294:30

...to distinguish between zinc and copper 1982's. I bought this exact model a couple years ago and it works great!

Once you know what the (poorly minted) zinc versions look like, they tend to stick out from the copper ones. But the scale is a good way to double check. You will find more copper than zinc versions.

The copper cents weigh about 3.11gm, while a zinc cents are around 2.5gm.

Thanks for the link, Skippy. Actually, at this stage, I'm trying to avoid that investment...if only my home-made scale worked!! Probably the stick is too slippery for the coin...I dunno what is going wrong :(

Here are 3 ways to try, The drop test- read this from Susan at About.Com coins http://coins.about.com/od/uscoins/f/copper_to_zinc.htm

Next check Amazon they have digital scales for $9.99 and up.

Last, use a emery board instead of the stick, it is rough enough to hold the coin.
    Just some thoughts, Bill :)

for sure, drop the penny for a digital scale, it is worth its weight in gold, you can sort so many pennies faster and never miss one, I have sorted 300 thousand snd sort out the 82 and I can run them accross the scale just and fast as I can switch them, it is well worth it....good luck

Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a scale after all...I don't want to damage my pennies by using the sound test! I'm still optimistic about making the stick and pen trick work...let's see!

Yes, I've been lucky and have found several- they have been selling quite well on ebay. I have two up for bid now that will end in 11 and 13 hours repectively. One is at $31 and one is at $10. There is one nickel up for bid right now by another member of this forum. Last I checked, the bid is over $50. It closes in a few days.

should buy a scale IMO. It's helpful for more than just pennies. Especially if you get into bullion item.s Therer's accurate ones for $10-$20
