Midas, I'm probably in the minority on this, but that is ONE UGLY CONCEPT DOLLAR! The proportions are all wrong and the design is old-fashioned. I don't particularly like the 19th-century "dentils" on the periphery, the "IN GOD WE TRUST" is way too teensy-weensy, Ms. Liberty is bug-eyed and her nose and mouth are waaaaaaaaay too small and pointy, the eagle on the reverse is skewed to one side and it appears that the sun is burning his wing, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is lop-sided, the reverse is too "busy" compared with the obverse (especially with the addition of the incuse "PEACE" motto - itself being the only incuse device used) and it appears that the designer ran out of room and stuck the denomination (in this case "ONE CONCEPT") in the only place that was left bare on the coin: SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE! Ah well, as the saying goes, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and I'm not beholding any beauty in this particular piece. I'll have to see how they design the Millard Fillmore dollar before I make any final judgements on it... . Who knows, they might spruce him up a little bit and his dollar might become all the rage...!!!
I'll take that design (or something like her) over this modern day disaster anyday: How they will "dress up" a Fillmore, Arthur, Coolidge, Harding or a Buchanon dollar along with other Presidents will be challenging to say the least. I love the SAC reverse, but I could do without SAC and her kid on the obverse. There are many concept dollars that would have served purpose and looked beautiful...but no, we went with the PC crowd and abandoned all of the traditions and values that Teddy Roosevelt fixed in the mint a 100 years prior. What a shame...a deep shame!
4 thoughts: 1, I don't think a presidential series golden dollar will be much of an educational tool. It will be easier to buy a poster of the presidents than it will be to assemble a collection of golden dollars for classroom use. Unlike the quarter, most of the US rarely, if ever, sees a Sac in circulation as it is. 2. Many banks were already fed up with the state quarter series before the L&C nickels came out. Many refuse to carry either now. Good luck getting a complete set of presidential dollars from anywhere but the US Mint. 3. The state quarters are a great hit because everyone can identify with at least one of them simply because they live there. How many second graders do you expect to "identify" with some obscure dead guy that's nothing more than a exam question in history class. Somehow I just don't picture the same public reception. 4. I second the motion, make a commem series, not a circulation/buisness series.
Right...and they will ONLY sell them by the roll...for $$$$$$$....and if you want a complete set you have to have P-D-S.... Speedy
I believe you may be wrong Speedy. as every vest pocket dealer and collector will be selling theirs on eBay, right along side of those two guys on the shoppers channel with the encased and graded versions. There will be a lot of places for the novis to spend his money and start a collection of these so called coins.
OldDan...you have something there....but where will those people get them...I don't think there will be many banks and stores wanting to get them...so if thats the case most everyone will have to get them from the mint and then after they make a few bucks they will be even higher.... I'm so glad I'm not collecting things like this...Peace dollars and WL haves are a lot nicer! Speedy
Guys....this forum is not the place to take about poltics or who likes the schools. The posts are now over in the General Discussion Froum.... Speedy
Speedy, I understand there is a clause in the President dollar coin bill that "mandates" all government agencies, including FDIC banks, "activly distribute the coins.
The Bill calls for the only president coins to be produced during the program, and for the Sacky to return once all presidents have been coined. I figure that would be around 2020, maybe later.
How many times has the goverment done what it says it will?....I wouldn't bet on this...I will have to see it first. Speedy
The senate version sure makes some interesting reading. Especially down near the end with the 1 oz. 99.99 fine $20 Buffalo gold coin. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s109-1047
Actually, the bill now says that they will continue to make Sacagawea dollars at the same time as the 4 President dollars. When the bill was first introduced, it stated that the Sac would be stopped during the release of the President dollars but now they've modified that. Another thing they modified was the release of dollars for living Presidents. At first they were going to make dollars for current living Presidents but now they have to be dead for at least two years. So, if the series starts in 2007, like it's proposed to be, and no currently living President dies by the time this series ends then we will see a coin for Ford and Reagan but not for Carter (since he's still living). Likewise, if any currently living President dies and has been dead for at least two years by the time this series gets to their term, there will be a coin made for them but it may not be in sequence with how the Presidents served (since other preceding Presidents would still be alive). It would get kinda hit-and-miss at the end it sounds like. Another interesting tidbit involving these dollars is the non-consecutive term policy. Since Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms, he gets two coins for his presidencies. He was our 22nd and 24th Presidents. The 22nd and 24th terms would come out in the 6th year of this series (year 2012), obviously the same year for the release of the coins for both terms. So, the only difference between these two coins would be the reverses, the difference being his term numbers. According to the bill, the obverses and all other features would be the same between the two coins. Like I said earlier, this program is supposed to begin in 2007. The first series would include Washington, our first President of course, so he will be on one of the dollar coins as well as all five of the state quarters for that year. Guess which state is slated to be released in 2007 in the State Quarter program? Yup, Washington. He'll be all over that year's Mint set. And one final thought (and then I'll shut up). Have you counted how many coins will be in the 2007 and 2008 Mint sets? Five dollar coins (4 President and 1 Sac), five Statehood quarters as well as the normal cent, nickel, dime and half dollar for a grand total of 14 coins per Mint. Multiply that by the two Mints and we have a 28-coin Mint set for 2007 and 2008. That would beat the old record of 22 from 2004 and this year, but are they going to be able to stuff three pliofilm sheets in each Mint's envelope I wonder? And what about the Proof sets? They've used two plastic lenses so far but will they include a third plastic lense and use a fatter box than they're using now? That'll really screw up these collectors (like myself) that have these neat and tidy 1999-2008 collection boxes that are slotted only for the two-lense Proof sets.
Tanner, I may have missed a year of news, but when did Ford die? I am sure Father Time (or the Grim Reaper depending on your frame of mind) will catch up with him and perhaps a couple of other ex-Presidents by that time.
how much do u guys think the mint will raise prices on the sets in 2007? I think it will be fun to collect the series. I cant wait for it.
Oops, you're right, kort. Ford's not dead yet. So they would skip from Nixon to Reagan in the case that none of the currently living Presidents die. But, a lot can happen in 12 years, huh? Thanks for the correction.
It also says and the end, in the year 2009 they will mint 4 different Lincoln cents, one every 3 months.
The bill that passed the house last month did not include these provisions. Once the senate passes a bill a compromise will have to be worked out for the final bill. I'm guessing under the senate version we won't have to deal with a Hillary coin.
