    This is an important article that can save Morgan Dollar colectors money. The article has pictures and examples of DMPL, PL AND PR Morgan Dollars and how to identify them. Ebay has too many auctions where the seller makes PL claims on coins that are not, and this article addresses this problem.

    Good to read, I'll read the rest in a minute...
    It is buy the coin, not the holder, but the thing is, if the coin is designated DPL, then it is a DPL, and this can be best seen in person
    When buying online, sometimes you have to trust the slab, and the pictures, I did that with my DPL, and it is a solid DPL
    My thing is, it is not smart to buy PL's and DPL's raw, because most are just doctored photos, if you are buying PL's and DPL's raw, make sure it is in person... Just another way to avoid stupid mistakes :)

    You are absolutely correct. Got it have it in hand to ensure integrity. Of course assuming you are well educated to start with.

    I love these coins and enjoy admiring their contrast.

    Keep on Collecting!

    Apologies to whoever wrote the article, but there is one big problem - a good bit of that info is flat out wrong. For example, the following are the correct qualification criteria -

    PL = Prooflike
    NGC - reflectivity at 2-4 inches
    PCGS - reflectivity at 2 inches

    DMPL = Deep Mirror Prooflike
    NGC - reflectivity at 6-8 inches
    PCGS - reflectivity at 4-6 inches

    - so PCGS is definitely not the most conservative when assigning this special designation.

    Also, this comment -

    "Also, a Deep Mirrored coin will show raised "hairlines" in the fields, not to be confused with scratches, from the polishing agent or tool. Sometimes these hairlines will be prominently noticeable, and sometimes not, but they will always be present on a polished business strike DMPL or PL coin."

    - is incorrect. While it is possible that a PL or DMPL coin will have raised polish lines, it is far from being true in every case. In fact, it would be the exception rather than the rule.

    And yes the dies that produced PL or DMPL coins - for not all PL or DMPL coins are Morgan dollars, there are plenty of other coin types as well - were polished. But then all new coin dies are polished, with the emphasis being on the word new. PL and DMPL coins are the result of planchets being struck with new dies only - not as a result of planchets being struck with re-worked or dies that have been polished after being used.

    This article should either be removed or edited and re-written to reflect the correct information.

    Thanks Doug....very helpful.

    I want to own a nice DMPL without distracting hairline scratches. It just goes on my expansive wish list!

    Sorry, but your information is incorrect. PCGS is 2-4 inches for a Proof Like. It's in their own coin grading guide. So, on this, NGC and PCGS are even.

    PCGS's coin grading book also states that a DMPL must be 6 inches in reflectivity, and not 4-6 inches. It's a little confusing because, from this criteria, a PL should be from 2-5 inches for both PCGS and NGC.

    So, they are even, but in the coin collecting universe PCGS still gets the nod for being the most conservative over NGC. It's the reason their slabs trade for more, and often sell "sight unseen". It's really just an opinion because I think they are both the same, but the majority goes with PCGS.

    The rest of the article has been edited for errors.

    You can say they are even if you like, but trust me, there are many who know they are not. PCGS is more lenient with this special designation just like they are with all the other special designations.

    You could be right in the real world, but their book makes them appear even. I personally don't have enough experience comparing the two companies, side by side, when it comes to DMPL Morgans.

    I do think PCGS is a little more lenient with certain dates in every series, but I'm not sure about NGC. I do have a bunch of experience with that. I will add this to the article as a "noteable" possibility.

    Thanks for your help.

    I agree with that completely. FS (Jeffersons) for sure, CAMEO for sure, don't know about FB or FH, but my guess is they are more lenient with those as well.

    I just came from the NGC website, where I seached through the ask NGC posts. The rep for NGC said PL you must see details in the reflection at 2-4 inches and for DPL you must see details at 6 inches or better. That was it!

    I have quite a few raw that are PL or DPL and I will find out the exact method used before I submit anything. :hatch:

    Here is my favorite I snipped on ebay. VamWorld claims only 22 total graded, 5 like this one with 5 finer.
