What is your opinion would you rather have 1 Really nice coin that is worth the same amount or more of your entire collection, or would you prefer a collection of coins worth the same amount as that one really nice coin, I will post my opinion later I want to know what you think!

    Yep me too...definitely quality.

I think that most people would prefer fewer, higher quality coins -- myself included. However, a collection of one coin isn't really a collection, and most collectors end up having more coins than they intended. It is just the nature of collecting, methinks.

Just to go a little deeper :D. Imo I think say having a 1895 Proof Morgan Dollar in PF65 is much more impressive collector wise, then say 5,000 circulated common date Morgans.

I agree with Leadfoot too, I would go a little crazy if I could only have one coin.

Very true, however what I think I would like the most was a few nice coins instead of one VERY nice coin

I always tell people in the shop that your going to do better in the long run with 1 nice coin that you paid $100 for versus 10 coins you paid $10 each for.

Cheap coins are cheap for a reason, they are common and easily attainable. We don't just pick a coin and say "oohh this one is going to be expensive" they are expensive because they are harder to find, people are looking for them, and they are much more easily sold in the long run. I talk to people all the time who want to buy coins as an investment... the first words out of my mouth are usually "DON'T". There are very few people who can buy the kind of coins that need to be bought as true investment pieces.

Very well said...I kind of like to balance the two. So maybe instead of a 66, I get 4 64's. And yet - sometimes I think quality is an AG, G problem free Large Cent.

I'd prefer to have a variety of different lower valued coins because I find it more enjoyable. Looking, holding, and storing one coin day in and day out sounds like what you married folks are accustomed to.

The way your question is phrased, I'll have to go with quantity. I wouldnt never even consider trading in all of my coins for a single coin equaling my collection's total value. What fun would it be to look at the same coin every day? Now, on a day to day collecting basis, I always choose quality over quantity. I'd rather have one really nice ms67 lincoln than say a whole bag full of ag Lincolns.

I love having complete collections, so I'd say quantity. Now it is very nice to have a quality coin as well, but I think it is really cool to own every Rosie, every Sac, every Kennedy. I'm working on a couple others to complete as well. I love the complete album and, for the same worth as you said, I'd rather have more coins.

You can make a good case for both, but the reason I tend more toward quantity over quality is that when you go to coin show, coin store or even on e-bay, you can only buy what they have for sale at the time. Simple availability has gotten to be an issue in the last couple of years. Nicer stuff is being held in stronger hands and they don't need to sell. If I have to wait and wait to find just the right coin, I might be waiting a long time, and that's no fun. For example, I went to a coin show yesterday and made some impulse buys, just because the money I had allotted for that show was burning a hole in my pocket and I didn't want to go away empty handed.:(

I could have hundreds of St Gaudens, or one MS69 St Gaudens...
I'd take the 69, any day
    I have 5 MS63 morgans
I paid around $50 each, for 4 of them, and $137.50 for the DPL
    Now, that is about $180
Now I could have those same 5, very nice morgans, or poor worn, non graded, common dated morgans, and have tons of those
    I'd rather have the quality
Also with my indian head quarter eagles
    I have a AU55 and a AU58
I could have some VF30's for the same price, but I don't want a worn coin, I want the best one my money can buy
    Just keep saving
Don't buy a coin for months on hand, if you have to
It will all be worth it, you can say, I could have bought ten of these, that look like crap, but instead, I have a really nice, that make others drool :)
Nobody wants to see a huge collection, of a bunch of worn down coins, and people bragging about them
I guess it comes down to what you want to collect
Do you want quality or quantity, you could want 100 crap morgans, or 1 amazing morgan
I'd take the 1 amazing one, each and every time

This takes the question to an extreme - having only one coin. I can't imagine such a thing.

But yes, quality over quantity any day. I just occasionally migrate up by upgrading and selling the oldies. No need to accumulate !

Quality is great, but for us poor folks, quantity (so long as they are not absolute garbage) is more enjoyable IMHO. You'd say to someone, "wanna see my COIN?" or my "coin collection". Of course, if you're rich, then you can just buy anything, anytime, then it doesn't really matter. Besides, when the economy really crashes (we ain't see nothin' yet), I think more is better.

I think you have to reach a balance between the two. I need five more Buffalo Nickels to complete my set. I could easily finish the set for fifty dollars or less. Would I be happy if I did that ? No, I certainly wouldn't, so I will slowly acquire the last five in a grade that has the eye appeal I want at a price I can afford and willing to pay. Do I wish the were all gong to be MS-67? While I do, I also know it won't happen unless I want to take about five years to do it. Two things I will not accept are "fillers" and replicas.

clembo A closed mind is no mind

Basically took the words out of my mouth Leadfoot.

Although I have gravitated to higher quality as the years have passed I still have plenty in the way of quantity and even small "hoards".

A person with one coin is no longer a collector IMHO. That person is an investor.

I would consider trading in my "hoards" for one of the same date of much better quality. Actually I should when I get down to it. I have 10 or 11 small motto Two Cent Pieces and really only need one. Course I have more than any kid on the block. ;)

Very interesting question and now ya got me thinking. Don't ever let that happen again! :)

For a collection, quality. The key in a high grade. It can be completed later. (you didn't say anything about not getting anymore coins after). For investment in this economy. Many middle of the road coins. When the market turns, you can make a small premium on manhy of the coins and then get the quality 1 for your collection. you don't want all your eggs in one basket!
