It has natural, but not uniform toning, raised rims, but a soft strike at the bottom of the reverse. Also a few small rim hits by 7 o'clock on the obverse. Otherwise, not bad.

Please let me know how you would grade this.

    Thanks,

    Eduard

I don't know how to grade these but I would guess at AU 58- MS 60ish cleaned. No luster from the photos. Still a pretty coin.

    Good solid XF40.

No way it's VF, and not quite up to AU... so I gotta go with XF.

Very cool, Eduard ! :thumb: This is one of my favorite types on the Wish List.

I believe it is AU- very little wear to be seen. I can't tell how much luster is left. The obverse fields look pretty bright compared to the rest of the coin, which makes me wonder if they were cleaned up a bit. Also- is some of the toning on the obv below the last star abit bumpy, suggesting corrosion? These are of course just questions I'm raising, not opinions, so I'm interested in what Eduard has to say. I believe it's solid AU details, however.

I would call it a nice XF

Eduard, How's the luster in-hand? The picture's lighting makes it very difficult to assess, and it is critical to grading of this coin (and most coins). Please advise on this issue....Mike

p.s. my sense is the coin is AU details and may or may not be net graded as per the answer to the question above.

p.p.s. that is also a rather odd weakly struck area. I can't say I've seen one of these struck quite like this before -- but neither am I a serious student of the series.

    Thank guys.
Concerning luster, you know it is difficult to say - this coin has the most awful toning i've seen, it is dark and ugly, specially around the peripheries.

If there is any luster left, it is minimal, and buried beneath the dark toning. Don't think it is corrosion, just dark tone. It does seem to have very little, if any wear at all though, that is its one saving grace. AU50?

    Thanks guys,

    Eduard

With that much detail left on the coin, it should have luster below that toning, and if you've not seen any then I suspect the coin was cleaned and has since retoned. Therefore I'll assign an AU details, cleaned, net XF grade to the coin. However, remember, any grading done from pictures is tenuous at best. Respectfully...Mike

One more thing, Larry Briggs' book mentions that one of the reverse dies has extremely mushy legends- sounds like this coin.

I'll go with 900 on this one solid XF

I can't help but think it's retoning after an old clean / dip. The old timers felt that was perfectly fine, so a lot of old coins got hit.

I have to agree with the XF-4O Yes briggs defines OBV 2 Virtually Even Date w/rev C "mushy" .

I've got to say it is a AU-50. A very nice coin with an old cleaning.
