Awright, you copperheads ! Time to play America's favorite home entertainment game "attribute THIS, pal !"

Maybe an 1835 will give you at least a little challenge; you sharpies ripped through the 1805 a little too easy.

This one is ex-Jules Reiver. Feel free to throw down a grade si vous plais.

Again - shot through a slightly scratched flip. Pardon the glare. Obverse is underexposed; real coin is a little lighter. Exact opposite for the reverse.

Rock on, soul surfers ! :D

    Looks like a N-15 in a NCS slab, #5073402-004, XF Details. :D

I am thinking N-7, but need to look some more.

Well, it's obviously a young head (aka head of '36). So therefore it can only be one of five varieties... N.7 (or N.17 a later die state), N.8, N.14, N.15, or N 16.

It can't be N.14 because the C in AMERICA isn't flat topped. Scratch that one off the list.

It can't be N.15 because there's no reverse die crack across tops of UNITED, nor does the leaf tip below C in AMERICA come close to touching the letter. Scratch that one off the list.

It can't be N.16 because there's no reverse die crack. Scratch that one off the list.

That means it's either N.8 or N.7 (or it's late die state cousin, N.17).

We can eliminate N.17 because the reverse die is perfect, not buckled like this variety.

So we're down to two -- N.8 or N.7. Looking carefully at where the coronet tip meets the hair lock, you can plainly see the small offset that distinguishes N.7 from N.8. In addition, the telltale (but not always) sign of N.8 -- a crack through the 1 in the date -- is not there.

    So this is an N.7.

Or at least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it....Mike

p.s. if you really want to make it difficult, try any date from 1852-1855.

Then you are on your own. :)

I agree - N-7. I can see the delicate re-cutting on the first A and M in America, both on the right side. Also N-7 leaf 6 is PC and on N-15 in is SPC - this looks more PC to me. :)

Last scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark :

BUREAUCRAT: We've got top men on this.
    INDIANA JONES: Who ???
    BUREAUCRAT: TOP. MEN.

MS or AU all day long TPG wise, AU to XF to an EACer I'd bet. If that coin is in XF plastic, I'll swallow a large cent (metaphorically speaking, of course).

Darn nice coin, BTW. I'd love to own it.

Well I am not an EAC'er, but(without respect to the two colors shown in the photographs) I would have expected a TPG to grade it AU. Which means AU plastic - but I would grade the coin a XF45. Trying to figure out what you meant by in "XF plastic".

    That's right.

Purchased raw at EAC 2009 as net EAC55. Ex-Reiver, ex-Tom Reynolds. With NGC certificate MS62.

    THANKS FOR PLAYING !!! ;)

Wow was I off - isn't that wear above the eye brow? I mean the lightness of the copper is this area makes me think wear versus weak strike. And whats up with the two different colors is that just your pictures? Is the reverse as nice a color as the obverse?

DOH!!!! Never mind it just dawned on me what you meant. That no tpg would have graded it that low. DOH again!!!!

    Yes.

Yes. The reverse photo is overexposed. There's a limit to how much "fix" I can do in Photoshop... :goof:

I would have taken new pics, but all my good coins are in the bank vault right now.
