How is the best way to start collecting small notes? I really dont know to much about paper money but it seems interesting! This question has probably been asked before . BUT I would like to find out more before i start collecting paper money, my wife says I spend enough on coins
Hi SND, The first thing to do would be to get a book on currency..Then I would decide on something easy on the wallet to get started. Maybe start with $1 "star" notes from circulation. They're not real common but are not rare either. Plus , if you stick to $1 notes you won't break the bank as you can always spend them! You could also collect FRB districts A-L for a given series. There's a lot of ways to collect currency and not spend a bundle. You can ask your teller or convenience store clerk to save them for you. Now, I cannot guarantee that starting a collection like this won't lead to bigger and better things because it probably will. Most of all have fun!.......................................... Fixed it Daggar and Whoops! Love San Fran too. lol .....................John
ask 50 different people, you will get 50 different answers but like coins, the best thing to do before buying is to educate yourself. Also, ask lots of questions about the notes your interested in. Lots of great finds can be found in circulation but if your interested in collecting by district, i would suggest A-L i dont think dready likes San Francisco lol good luck and do post images of your finds/purchases
Basicly what they said LOL also if the mrs is complaining then try getting her hooked on world notes some wonderful designs out there :high5:
Welcome to the Papermoney Fourm SND. Great question and as mentioned you will get different opinions from every collector's viewpoint. What you have received thus far is correct, read and read some more. Then you must determine what you would like to do. Once you have done that, develop a tracking system thta fits your collect goals as it is easy to buy duplicates of notes once you start getting a few. For me I bought two paperback US PaperMoney RedBooks and use one for highlighting the notes I buy and one for general reference. Then I buy selective books on the notes that interest me. Since you live in the St. Louis area, consider putting together a collection of small size notes from that Federal Reserve Branch Bank. It is denoted by the Letter "H" and for numeral notes the number "8". The numeral notes are from the Series 1928 and 1928 A Series notes. You can do this on the less expensive side by buying notes starting from the Series 1963 to current. Some star notes of all Series will be more expensive for sure......so go to an auction house like Heritage and join up! You will have access to allthe auction archives to do research. I am afraid to say that once bitten by the Paper Bug, it very well may lead you down a path that becomes even more expensive than coins! Good luck and keep us posted! RickieB
I would pick up something that sort of jumps out as being "different" from current US Currency. That sort of leaves out most recent FRN's with the possible exception of the 1928/1934 notes with the lime green seals . You can find most $1 Silver Certificates for a good price...1957 and some of the later 1935 series can be had for a small premium over face. Same goes for 1953/1963 series $2 and $5 US Notes. Really depends on your personal preferences and more importantly...your budget!
Though mainly a coin guy, I've been bitten by the paper bug as well. If I had the budget, I would have gone nuts by now. LIke others have said, there is a lot of different ways to do it. Here's an idea I had which I personally like. Get some of the different bills that currently circulate as a start. I got 3 different 5 dollar bills, then bought an older red seal one for 7.43 or so (with shipping) and I put them all on a single page holder (for 4 small notes). I think it makes for a cool display. Later, I may try to get older ones. Kind of a type collection for 5s. Anyway, that is one idea. Here is my page of 5s. Bob
Small notes :thumb:Thanks everyone i have really enjoyed this website since i have joined . I am on LTD , I have some antique booths more for a hobby than a business just to stay busy. A while back customers were asking if i would be willing to carry coins so I have . Which actually selling pretty good, like anything else research resarch research , i have learned that LOL But the paper money is very interesting, this would be for my own hobby among others . I am legaly blind in one eye so that you all know if my spelling or puncation is wrong It takes extra time for me to check dates , mint etc. But i enjoy it and keeps me busy. Just like this thread you could probably type it in seconds , where it took me 5 min. I am looking forward to ready the paper money forumn as i do coin talk. This would be a better world if people would find a pastime hobby no matter what it might be , kick back and relax.hya:
Yes, ClayIrving, that is what I meant, lol. First of all, Welcome to CT, you will find this a great forum. Secondly, what an awesome collection of fives you have. Totally cool!!!!! THANKS for sharing!!!!
Wow...never came across your site before. Very nice!! ...and btw:, there's a lot more than just 5's there! I would like to do something like that with my notes, but for now I just have them dumped into a web album on Picasa. http://picasaweb.google.com/dursin70/PaperMoney?authkey=Gv1sRgCIWPyuXAuof3uQE
ClayIrving.... #1 The Series 1934 D Silver Cert you have is the Wide Variety 1 Star note. It is pretty common for the star, but nice. The Narrow variety is indeed more rare and hard to come by..... Nice collection of 5's.... Keep up the good work. Are you from Irving Tex? RickieB
Thank you - I made a note that it is a wide 1 variety. I'm not from Irving, TX. I live in Southern California.
I never told anyone except friends about my site until this afternoon. I see you also got bit by the "note bug". I'll have to spend some time looking at your collection! On first glance, it looks really nice.
Wonderful site and really great collection. You should be very pleased with such a fantastic set of small size notes! <--- Very impressed.
clay .. as a suggestion, you should post the link to your collection in your sig most of us do that, and its a great way to show off your site and collection. great job!
Ok. I put the link in my sig. You know, it was a lot of work to build the collection and it gets progressively more difficult!
