Hello All, I/ve read several articles on this topic and have seen starting times of both 2006 and 2007. Does anyone know which one it will be for sure. Thanks.
Hi, FPP. below are some links that i've found discussing this topic. from what i can tell, 2008 seems the likely date (thanks, north dakota! -- see usa today article), but the authorizing bill hasn't yet been passed by our illustrious senate. so it isn't set in stone. http://www.house.gov/castle/pr_05_Castle Maloney.html http://money.cnn.com/2005/04/27/pf/new_dollar/?cnn=yes http://www.usatoday.com/money/2005-04-26-dollar-usat_x.htm http://www.coin-op.org/AAMA Government Relation News.htm http://reid.senate.gov/espanol/record.cfm?id=237814
Thanks for the info. Being new to collecting I have not formed an opinion on which I would like better. The Golden Dollar or the series of Presidential dollars,,, but I think it would be a big mistake to have them run concurrently. My goals are to collect for my children and hopefully they will take an interest in it. 4 new coins a year would add some excitement for them, but I/m not sure it would be great for the coin collecting world. Thanks again.
why don't you think it would be a good thing? i'm not sure where i fall on that one, but i'm curious to see how others feel. personally, i'd be much more excited if it was say, great american writers, or musicians, or philanthropists or whatever. that being said, i can't wait for the william henry harrison dollar. sweet.
My comment was more towards running the Golden and Presidential at the same time. I may be wrong, but I would think most collectors would like to see some type of appreciation in value of their collection. I think running both at the same time would not be conducive to that. The collecting world would be flooded with (5) dollar coins a year. The only one to benefit from this would be the mint. Again, these are just initial thoughts as I/m new to this. Reading these threads I find that some of the more experienced collectors are not for either one of these dollar coins and would like to see something else..
I don't like it... I don't like the State Quarters or the New Nickels either..... All the mint is doing is hyping up a lot of collectors and non collectors making them think that these coins are going to rare and that they should buy these sets from the mint for $$$$$ over face value... Face it...a coin that had millions and billions is not going to be worth anything...and even if it does there will be soooo many BU rolls put back that circulated grades will be rarer than BU coins!.... Nope...I ain't going to fall for this gig this time... Speedy
I think all the new stuff coming from the mint is just wonderful! I am hopeful that it sparks a new generation of collectors, whom can start off collecting things from circulation! Go US Mint Go!
I am betting that some of the presidential issues will be low mintages, who the heck really wants a Calvin Coolidge, Millard Fillmore, etc ( no offense to fans of them ) one of the ones i can't wait for is the teddy roosevelt! I am guessing they are passing this new coin act because the state quarters are running out, and they need a new money maker. ah well, i am a sucker and will be purchasing them all... hopefully dansco will come out with an album before the set is done ;(
That is one thing I don't like...to many new collectors are collecting these hyped up coins and one day when they go to sell and don't pull even or just pull even its going to be a mess.... Speedy
As those who read posts on this forum on a regular basis know, I am in the minority regarding Presidential coins ---- but I love the idea. Guess it was teaching history for 35 years. Hope the proposition passes. William Henry Harrison. 30 days as President. Oh well, the coins will get his name out there, as well as other luminaries such as Millard Fillmore, and people will learn some things. I also think that a new series will be popular for beginning collectors, if not those who have been at it for a long time.
Some of you guys hate it, some of you guys like it. Think about the values!!! in the future. People are gonna want these really bad because they are the presidents. All you always say that you want to collect the past, well there you go. THE PAST OF THE US!!!!
Spider... I think it will take soooo long for these to go up in value that it would take three or for handing downs before they were worth anything...."the past of us" might take a long time and right now I'm collecting for myself...not for some great-great-great-great-great grandson...or who ever gets my coins. Speedy
Speedy, What do you think the mint should do? Should they just leave the Golden Dollar and not start this program? Should they change the dollar to something else? And if they did, dont you think that whole process would be hyped also? Whats the answer? I look forward to your opinions.
I think the mint needs to do its job...bringing coins MintState and Proof coins for collectors with out charging an arm and leg...back sometime ago they didn't charge much over face value...they should offer rolls of everything...for not much over face...yes..its fine to have a dollar coin but if they do they should take away the paper dollar. They should change the dollar coin and make it look better...thye should take off everybody off the coins and not put people faces on them... I could go on but I don't have time right now.... Speedy
Lets see, I said these new coins would cause many to collect from circulation, and hopefully breeding many new collectors, gee, how much would they lose if they went to sell since they got the coins from circulation? Maybe you didn't read and understand what I said. I am all for it, as new people enter, they may eventually expand to other areas and interests of the hobby. I give the US Mint much credit. For they are not stale as they were in the early 80's.... They have made it a exciting time IMO, as I get happy myself when I found my 1st Bison/Keelboat nickels. I also remember rushing to WalMart to get a new Golden Dollar... The Mint will never be perfect, but I really like what they are doing as of late.
With the rate of increase we are seeing in a full set of Sacagawea dollars I most definitely WANT them to continue along side the Presidential Dollars and while everyone is chasing the Presidents I will be very content to find my Sackies. This series has doubled in the last two years and still on the move!
*shrugs* i always thought, the bigger the demand, the bigger profit. so you would think that would mean all your coins would jump up in value...maybe not, but it is a good supply and demand reasoning.
