ice Just happy to be here

I just couldn't come up with one coin to collect that price wise I could afford to collect the whole set. Thinking of this I was thinking that maybe a 20th centry type set that will include one example of every major design of regular-use coin, not including gold coins. I already have most of the coins with the exception of the Barber 25c and 50c. I also don't have any Franklin 50c's (why I don't know). I could up grade the coins as I find better ones and my son would most likely put a set together at the same time and I have enough coins to get him started. This would be very affordable and give me a starting point and I could have a set to work on collecting. I could even eventually add all the mints of each coin to expand it when I have one of each coin. I like this idea what do you guys and gals think? Ice

Ice, I have to tell you at the beginning of the year I wanted to continue collecting, but be careful due to the economic times. So I started a complete set of Memorial cents and have them in an album. To see all those little coppers cartwheeling in the ablum is beautiful. So much so I wish I would have done it a long time ago. I have all the varities and all the proofs. Will it ever be rare or anything? No, not in my lifetime. Was it inexpensive, yes it was, and worth every penny (no pun intended).

Instead of buying years and dates to fill holes, why not try Theme collecting. World coins offer a great range of themes to pick from, all are beautiful and have rarities worth search for. Or you might want to start at what I consider the top, Medals. Great rarity compared to coins and the are still affordable.

franklin halves might be an option, no real keys and you can shop around and find some very nice coins.

I like the idea of type sets. It allows you the opportunity to buy common date coins in affordable prices. It also gives you the opportunity to see the different designs. I say go for it - it should provide you and your son hours of fun.

No surprise that I like a type set.
Mine is the core of my collection.

You get to decide what you want to belong to it.
You get to decide what grades you want.
It's easy to upgrade since you already have a coin that will help pay the cost of a better coin.
    It's easy to expand.

There's very few negatives to collecting a type set.
