Today I found a Buffalo Nickel in circulation for the first time in my life! I was very excited, as you fellow numismatists can imagine. This Nickel is really strange though. It looks as though someone painted silver paint on it and it has been baked off and it is now peeling. The edges have big flakes that I could easily just brush off. I'm affraid the pics won't show you half of what I see with the naked eye. Anyway, please comment:

What in the world happened to this 1938 Nickel????

that's a cool find and a wierd one. It almost looks like it is corroded. Other than that, I have no answer. Congrats on the find.

WOW! I've never seen a coin like this before! It looks like post mint damage of course, but this is just plain cool looking! Wonder what the others would say? WOW!

I wish you all could see it because it is actually peeling. It is the strangest looking thing I've ever seen. When I first found it, I actually thought that someone took a Jefferson nickel and glued on a buffalo plastic cover. Then I though it was just fake. Then when I picked it up and it weight about the same as any other nickel and I looked at it closely, I realized it was real.

Anyway, I look forward to others comments. Maybe I'll take some more pics in the sunlight afterwork tomorrow....

    Hi,

It looks like a cast fake that is falling apart:)

It does not appear to be real or of the proper alloy.

    Have Fun,
    Bill

I just looked at it more closely. It does appear to be a fake now. The edge looked like it had a seem, so I scratch it with my fingernail and it started destroying the metal. I guess my first impression was correct, that it is a fake.

Well certainly an interesting find, fake or not ;)

I think the coin was knocked around, and found it's way in the ground for a long time, and the enviroment got to it were the metal is just peeling off from whatever got to it under ground a badly damaged coin post mint damage.

I'd have to agree with Bill on this one.

I think it's an old cast fake that is about had it.
