I've been away from the boards for a while and upon my return I notice so many new names. How exciting to see our Coin talk community growing! I thought it might be fun to hear what everyone is currently pursuing. I'll start... Morgans...(I know, big surprise) STILL working on my date set, only a few more to go! Dansco 7070 Type Set. This has been more fun than I could have ever imagined! It's really opened my eyes to other series that I'm sure I'll pursue eventually. Family year sets...Only a few more to go to be current. These will serve as a sort of time capsule for Joe when he's older to tell the story of our geneology (sp?) and other important dates in our past. Joe's birthyear bullion set (silver) is about done (big thanks to tradernick for helping me with that elusive Maple ), unless I decide to move forward and expand it to include gold. My other thought is to back up 100 years and begin adding 1897 to it as well. I'm slowly but surely building a short set of Walkers. I'll devote more time, energy and $$ to these once my Morgans are a bit closer to completion. And of course Joe's world coin collection. He currently has 2 LARGE binders full...with no duplicates (those are stored in boxes). This is a continuous source of fun for BOTH of us! And last, but definitely NOT least...I've dipped my toes into the vast pool of world gold...thanks to GD . I'm hooked! There is a world of beauty out there that I was completely unaware of, thanks for opening my eyes Doug. Sure, I have tons of other random things, but this covers most of the things that we actively pursue. Although my coin budget has been redirected this past month. In light of our travels and my trepidation of leaving everything home (and it all wouldn't fit in a safe deposit box) we've had a rather large safe installed in the house. The measure of added security and peace of mind it gave me while we were gone has been worth every penny. OK, your turn...what are YOU working on?
My dad and I were looking at his Morgans and I saw and told him that he is 3 way from having a date set... I see GDJMPS got you too!!!...a few weeks ago I got my first gold Ducat! Now...I'm working on--- Proof Franklin halves...over half way done...they all must be slabbed and grade PF66 (CAMEO is alright) Cents 1909-Date...I think I'm 6 away... Washington Quarters...I think I'm 3 away. and that is about all....I'm buying other things but not working on anything much else. Speedy
My established long time projects that most of you are familiar with: Modern Japanese (1870-on) Walking Liberty Half Dollars (full set) Modified OFEC (including major monetary periods, like pre-decimal and decimal British) And more recently launched endeavors: Japanese puppet governments in China Japanese Protectorate of Korea Japanese conquered territories (mostly bills and notes - my first paper money efforts)
Modern proof commemorative sets. Complete original sets and not those overpriced certified singles that are popping up everywhere. Seems everyone is breaking the coins out of the sets and flooding ebay with them. That's quite alright, just makes my original packaged sets that more rare!!!
Look in dealers junk boxes...when I went to the show a few dealers had them in junk boxes for 50% off because they were only MS63 and also because they were slabbed by ANACS. Speedy
Only MS63....I could never afford anything higher than that with all of the key dates. Also, whats wrong with ANACS I think they are just as good as any of the other TPG's? - James
No, there were other grades too but it seemed like most of them were 63's...I agree with you...I see nothing wrong with ANACS but these "investers" who don't research much and just hear that PGCS and NGC are the best won't anything much else... So that is why (along with other things) ANACS slab sell for less. Speedy
heh, i'm the new person, so i hope you dont mind me answering as well cause i just started, i decided to start iwth the basics. Roosevelt Dime starting 1965 washington quarter 1965-1987 washington quarter 1999-2003 washington quarter 2004-2008 jerfferson nickel 1938 - 1961 jefferson nickel 1962- 1995 lincoln 1909 - 1940 Lincoln 1941-1974 lincoln 1975 none of them are complete but its fun searching for them
You might be able to fill your holes for these set by getting rolls at the bank to look through... Speedy
Well, my ventures are going to get more expensive REALLY quickly here. Here's a breakdown of my current sets, and the ventures I'm moving onto VERY shortly: I have: 1. A COMPLETE JEFFERSON NICKELS set!!! Just finished it TODAY! WOOOOO! 2. A complete Lincoln Cents set 1959-2005, all in AU-BU condition (including both 1960 small dates, the '70-S small date, and all 7 varieties of 1982 cents.) I'm working on: 3. I need 13 more Canadian cents (1900, 1900H, 1902-1908, and a couple small cents) to complete my 1900-2000 Canadian cents collection 4. I need quite a few more Wheaties from 1909-1938, but I have all of the 1938-1958 wheaties 5. I need a few more Roosevelt dimes (mostly silver) and the Dansco album to store them in 6. I just started my Mercury dimes collection today with about 20 that I purchased bulk from a garage sale (nothing special) and a Whitman Album from my coin dealer friend 7. I need a few more dollar coins in the Eisenhower Era, 2 more SBA's, and I have the '99 and 2000 Sac's. I'm going to start up soon: 8. Washington Quarters 1932-1998 (I'm workin' on the State 1/4's as they come to me in change) 9. Indian cents 1900-1908 10. Buffalo Nickels 1913-1938 11. "V" Nickels 1900-1913 12. Kennedy Halves 13. Franklin Halves And I'm gonna wait on: 14: Quarters from 1900-1932 15: Liberty Halves 16: Morgan and Peace Dollars 1900-1971 Anyway, that's the breakdown. I'm really enjoying looking for my Mercury Dimes at the moment.... they're SOOO purdy! ~AJ
I've been trying to figure out how to answer this question. I love to collect coins, I don't know why exactly but I haven't determined a particular focus yet. Anything silver, of course. I keep any wheaties I come across. But the fact of the matter is, I mostly collect what I find in my change, which isn't much. I just started working on filling some folders of cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves and Eisenhower and SBA dollars. Having just started almost anything I get in change ends up filling a hole in a folder, except cents. I'd really like to start collecting Franklin and walking liberty halves, mercury dimes and peace and morgan dollars. I'd like to pick up a few gold coins too. Well, that's what a collect vs. what I want to collect.
A few moderate changes here and there but generally; 1) English silver pennies by monarch, focusing on the 10th century. 2) Henry VI (1422-1461) of England Annulet Issue (1422-7) Type set, one coin of each denomination. 3) German 5 Reichspfennigs 1936-1944 (Berlin mint only) in UNC. 4) USA P Mint St. Gaudens 1920-1928 5) UK Decimal bronze coinage in BU 1971-84 6) UNC Silver Washington Quarters P Mint only 1950-64 (i hope to expand this back to 1940 and eventually 1932). That's it thus far.
I'm collecting Dutch coins by date, Euro's are complete to date, Beatrix gulden almost complete, miss a few5 gulden coins, Juliana complete, and Wilhelmina about 50% complete. Then world coins: type sets including mint marks and varieties for all countries I've visited. Main focus lies on Canada, UK, Dominican Republic and USA (although I've never ben there, but I intend to go there, so I alreade have a head start)
i think i am going to try that idea! i found a few yesterday, plus i caught some of my newbie mistakes (darn mint marks on the other side, not where i'm used to looking!)
I have so many Lincoln head cents saves out of habit for many many years that I finally decided to get the folders and see how many holes I can fill with circulated coins. I also save anything silver.
I've gone completely Darkside. Currently working on British type sets for Victoria and George IV; Type sets for Canada, Australia and a bit of New Zealand; British Conder Tokens with architectural design elements (churches, cathedrals, bridges, etc.), Darkside coins with ships on them, and a handful of medals. I lost interest in the Dansco 7070 and am selling it, along with the half cents and large cents. I will redo the US Type Set at some point in the future with better "matched" coins. Well, if I can afford it.
