How I got into collecting: the "wedding horde"

I wanted to tell this story, and it is relating to US coins.

The coin collector bug hit me when I was about ten years old, and this is how it happened:

My grandparents where married in the 30’s ( I forgot the exact date, but I will find it ) as a wedding present their parents gave them a silver set. Unfortunately because of their remote location ( a farm in the middle of nowhere ) they where not able to get the silver engraved. Instead they put a bunch of pocket change for my grandparents to take the silver and have it engraved…

Well, 50 years went by and they never got the silver engraved. When I was 10 I started to get an interest in coin collecting, my grandmother then remembered the coins… she gave them to me…

Now, these where some great coins. I remember looking at them in awe… it was the first time I saw a walking liberty, a mercury dime…

And they where all from the teens, twenties and thirties!

Well, I got more coins from my local bank, a bank teller took a liking to me and she sold to me at face value anything that she found that was old, mercs, franklins, etc.

For that I can not thank her enough! It was the cheapest coin store ever!!!!!

Well, I got older and turned into a “stupid teenager”.

My dad, in his infinite wisdom took my coin collection away from me and locked it away n his safe. Probably one of the best things my dad could have done for me! He said that when I was old enough, and had kids of my own, I could get them back.

Well, I am older now, and have a child of my own. I am going home to visit in two weeks and will be getting my coin collection back ;)

I wanted to start this thread because I plan on cataloging my old collection and sharing it with you all.
    My memory is cloudy, but I remember having a 1916 dime ( was it a D? I don’t remember! ) I also remember having some 1921 walking liberties ;)
    Well… time to find out!

This is going to be fun, especially now that I am older and can appreciate them…

The question “what was in someone’s pocket change in the mid thirties?”

Might I find AU coins from the twenties? XF’s from the teens?

    Stay tuned!

I don't know about you but i think i'm getting a bit excited here with anticipation. I'd love to be able to have a stash of coins somewhere that had been put away and i'd forgot what was there. It'd be like discovering them all again! :D

I remember Mr. bowers writing an article not that long ago, he was talking about history in places we don't realize. his example was a question: What was the coins in a cash register on june 19 2005 at such and such gas station" I am heavily paraphrasing here ;)

It made me think of my little "wedding horde" and how it is a piece of history, a rare chance to see what was in someones pocket october 8th 1938 ( thats when my grandparents tied the know )

Now i am using the phrase "hoard" but realize that this is not a ton of coins, maybe $4 or $5 in change, halves, dimes, nickels, etc. I can not remember if i had any peace dollars.

the dificult part will be seperating the wedding money from the money i got fromt he bank teller, but it should not be very dificult. anything newer then 1938 is from the bank...

and yes i love my dad for "holding" my coin collection for me, I would have probably sold it when i was a starving student :0

I DID sell a pile of 1964 kennedys that i had, and i regret it today...

if anyone here knows anything about canadian money and sees something here worth money let me know... I may just try and complete the set of silver 5c pieces, since i seem to be missing only a couple!

I wil take pictures of the coins and post them in the next couple days, most of them are good-fine condition.

i think that i "transposed" the 1919 with a 1916 in my head... getting these coins really brought back memorys. its been almost 20 years since i saw them!
