The 1955-S is readily available in higher grades but I'd like to use this as a grading exercise to better hone my/our cent grading skills. How would you grade this coin? I realized the lighting wasn't the greatest in the photos so I flipped it. The magnification is sure better than my eye sight. Is a post like this cool or considered a waste of space?
Post like this are enjoyable. It looks like their is an interesting die crack on the reverse at 9 o'clock. I think MS-64.
I think it would make a 64, but those 2 nicks are in the wrong spots - chin and "N" in cent. They might keep it to a 63 with the spots on the coin.
It sure is purty A nice MS63 RD in my opinion No wear, some lite scratches, and I see gash in the "N" in cents, which lowers the grade. Could be a 64, heck maybe even a 65 with out it
Thanks everybody. Hopefully one of these days I'll be as skilled of a grader as you all are. The coin: I forget exactly when I purchased this coin but remember doing so because it was just so nice looking. It just kind of jumped out at me when I was flipping through an album. I bought it from a local dealer I respect, in his shop, for $.60. It was marked as Ch BU. To improve my grading abilities I sometimes pickup inexpensive coins such as this to use as grading standards.
60 cents was a good price, and it is always good to pick up different examples of different grades of coins to practice
