This coin has been in the family for over 50 years. It is a 1921S.The 1 is missing from the date, whoever, you can see an impression of the one and the base of the one is most visible. Is this a mint error and what's it worth?
    Thank You

    Welcome to the forum, Rog.
Is your coin uncirculated? If not, the 1 might be worn down.
If it is uncirculated, the faint 1 might be the result of a grease filled die. There's usually not much of a premium placed on that type error.
A 1921-S Silver Dollar can have a value of anywhere between $10 to a couple of thousand, depending on it's condition. If it's a proof, it can be worth many thousands of dollars.
Just so you know, the vast majority of them are only worth a few dollars.
Is there any way you can post a picture?

    Good photo, Rog.
The coin does appear to be lightly circulated.
It also may be a grease filled die error. (of course it could be altered, in which case it would have lost it's numismatic value)
I suspect that if it is a GFD, there may be some collectors that would find it quite interesting, and would pay more than it's normal value.
Normally, a coin like this, would retail for somewhere between $12 and $20.
With an interesting flaw, it could bring several dollars more. How much more? That's hard to say.
Nice find though. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

From the pic posted, it looks like an altered coin. The missing 1 is in what appears to be a round spot. Without actually seeing the coin firsthand, it is really hard to be certain. But looks altered to me.

Based on the images I'm gonna have to say it looks like a filled die to me. If someone was trying to alter that coin - I think they would have done a better job at removing the numeral. The bottom edge of the first 1 is plain and distinct. The top of the 1 is faint but discernible. If this were an attempt at alteration - it is indeed a very poor one.

Well viewing the newest photo, it does look more like a filled die.

Grease filled die gets my vote. A pretty neat coin!
