Every year, I have a problem with my US Proof Silver Set. As expected, yesterday's shipment was no surprise. Incredibly, all 11 coins are absolutely perfect; however the plastic case is cracked right on the Kennedy Half Obverse. This could not have happened in shipment as the cracked case was facing inside the package! The other set I received, has a perfect case, but the Kennedy Half obverse has a scratch; as does the nickel. In the past, the Golden Dollar and cent had the defects. Does the US Mint even bother to inspect these sets? They charge enough! Now, I must return them, insured mail, at my expense, because they're too lazy to inspect them. Plus, once returned, the Mint makes customers wait a long while for replacement.
Before you send the set with the problem kennedy back are you sure it is a scratch and not a die crack? If it is a die crack the set might be worth keeping!!!
Not a Die Crack No, the blemish is surely not a die crack. It was too good to be true; my 2004 proof sets came in perfect condition so the Mint decided to slack-off with quality control in 2005 to cut costs. The set I just received was definitely never inspected! Now, I have to re-package, purchase a small carton, and return the set at my expense via insured mail. Maybe it's a gimmick to increase postal revenue too. Who knows?
Cracked cases Only one time in my many years of ordering from the mint, did I have cracked cases. After sending them back at my expense, and waiting several months, I called to see what the problem was. Apparently they have a large backlog of packages to be opened, months worth... I finally received good sets, but another problem began. My CC was billed for the second mailing which was already paid for. That took a while to get a refund. This year the regular proof sets never made it to my address. I just got a refund for that, and was charged again for a second mailing, so hopefully they will make it here... I still like ordering from the mint, and like the subcription plans.
I had to return one of mine also. Paid the postage and insurance on June 20th. As of July 1st, I had not heard anything about the return so I decided to call. The lady on the other end said that they had received it on June 27th, and to hold so I could talk to her supervisor. The supervisor got on the phone and asked me what I paid for shipping, told her and she said ok please hold. ( All I wanted to know was if I was going to get another set replaced) She came back on and gave me a confirmation # for a refund check for my shipping charges. Now, I've never had to send anything back so I didn't know if this was normal, but I'll take it.
I bought two of the proof sets. Had three cracked plastic covers. Did something foolish. I'm so used to getting problem-free proofs, I tore up, and threw away, the enclosed paper work before I even opened the coins to take a look. So, may just keep what I have and deal with the cracks. Anyway, pretty disappointing.
The Mint has a LOT of broken holders in this set, mine is already returned for replacement. BTW, does anyone know how long the mint takes to replace a return? Thanks
