I'm taking a trip to Colorado this summer with the wife, and I wanted to take an afternoon to check this place out. Has anyone been and how is it? How long should I schedule for it? (its already a busy vacation). Any advice is good advice! Josh
I was an intern there two summers ago, so I'm pretty familiar with it! It is, in my opinion, one of the best numismatic museums in the world. They have five exhibits, two of them permanent. The two permanent are the Harry Bass Jr. Pattern and Gold collection, which is utterly fascinating, and an exhibit of some of the rarest US coins, the 1804 dollar and the 1913 Liberty nickel. The three other exhibits rotate, and I believe at least one of them is on the currency of the Civil War. It is, however, a fairly small museum, as coins are not large objects. Accordingly, you will probably only spend three or four hours there. Don't forget to check out the exceptional library while you're there!
I visit the ANA Library often as I live only minutes away. You can walk through the entire museum in a few minutes but if you take your time it could take several hours. Admission is free to ANA members but non-members must pay a small admission fee.
