I saw this listed on e-bay last night and had never heard of one. Is there such a coin?? The auction would have ended last night late. Just wanted to know.
Yes. John Smith Gardner's Cents of 1794-95 had lettered edges. I'm not an expert at large cents, there may be others with lettered edges, but at least you know they exist.
Of course there is! Check here http://www.pcgs.com/prices/PriceGuideDetail.aspx?MS=1&PR=1&c=38&title=Flowing+Hair+Large+Cent
That link shows so-called "Red Book" varieties (a small subset of all known varieties). It shows a 1795 lettered edge large 1c, but not a 1794 lettered edge. I don't know if there is a 1794 LE; I don't recall one, but I'm no expert.
The interesting thing about the lettered edge large cents is they didn't concern themself over orientation so with heads up, the lettering can be rightside-up or upside-down and there are collectors that collect both for each variety, although currently there's no extra premium for the lettering to be either way. There are many 1794 varieties with Lettered Edge. S-17a, S-18a, and I think S-65. There are probably many more. So the term "1794 Lettered Edge" has little meaning.
All of the 1794's have lettered edges: http://coinfacts.com/large_cents/li...794_large_cents/1794_large_cent_varieties.htm It's the 1795's that have lettered edge and plain edge varieties, along with a very rare reeded edge variety. Ribbit
