I recently acquired this coin in a group lot, attributing it has been more difficult than I thought. The only place I found anything similar was in Grierson pg 254. It looks similar to plate 1394 but the text mentions issues from the Knights of St John and the description of those coins fits but no images. If so this will be a 13th century coin.

Here is the coin in question, very simple, 2 B's , different back ground color for me for the sake of clarity.

    12.4 mm
    2.2gm

Is anyone familiar with this type of coin? What is a good source of information for coins of Rhodes?

Nice one, but I can't really help much. All I can say is that I consulted my copy of Grierson and as you suggested, image 1394 in plate 87 seems like a pretty convincing match to me too.

The B's might point to an earlier phase on Rhodes -- the Genoese Signoria di Rodi under the overlordship of Emperor Andronikos II (ca. 1278-1307).

Lunardi has these on pp. 157-8 (also in Schlumberger pp.219-20):

Not exactly the same as your coin but similar, possibly a variation.
