OK, sorry for this, but I am brand new at this. Over the long term, which have more value - Proof Coins or Early Release Coins.
no such thing as early realese coins so the question is an easy one to answer. PROOF. the whole early release thing is a suckers game... a gimmick made up from the grading companies. You cant tell me that a last coin struck on the die at day 30, is better then the 1st coin struck on a new die on day 31? i dont think so. So the TPG's grading the first 30 days as early release and then making those coins sound better in quality is a silly gimmick. Dont waste you money on that
I agree with the others First-Day-Covers are way overrated. Stick with the proofs. BTW, WElcome to CoiNTalk!
I don't know how the two compare? Proof vs. Early Release Proof is a type of coin, and early release hunk o junk label, used, so that the TPG can make more money If you take a Regular Coin or a FS or Early Release coin, out of their labels, you can not see the difference, because there is none
Follow Up - First timer OK, I had read that the First Strike was not lagit so I was calling it early release. I guess my real question is which has more value long term, an MS70 Proof or an MS70 uncir coin. If I held both for 10 years, does the proof still have a better value.
Depends on Demand of the coin, and mintage of the coin If the uncirculated coin is lower mintage, and has higher demand, than the uncirculated coin is worth more, or vice versa for the proof

I started by collecting Silver Eagles (20 coin rolls). I was thinking of collecting the uncir or proof in MS 69 or MS70. But someone told me that the Silver Eagles do not have numastic value. Is that true.
Well, if you are wanting to compare the collectability of a regular business strike and proof coin, you are trying to compare oil to water.. There are a lot of variables involved like the availability of certain grades(ie strike quality), mintage and many other things I can;t think of at the moment.
You know I used to be big on thinking that, but now, I'd say that silver eagles, or more of a bullion coin You will never be able to complete a Proof 70 or Mint State 70 Silver Eagle set, and the prices are ridiculous! Why pay premiums, when you could have the same coin, that looks the same, for less?
I always thought lightning can strike twice, except the place it struck first isn't there any more Sorry, couldn't resist
Thanks for the reply. If I pay $40 for a MS69 2007 Silver Eagle today, will it ever be worth more in the future. I started out wanting to invest in PM and have taken a liking to the hobby. I am trying to figure what coins to collect and if certified coins are worth the premium over just buying regular strike coins.
It depends on the coin If it is a modern issue coin, not so much But a BU Raw Gold $2.5 Indian from the early 1900's, will be worth less, than a MS63 Graded Gold $2.5 Indian
