Dgs, say what?

You can do something for a very very long time and still not get it right.

I would want the coin that is desirable, regardless of the plastic or paper holder it is in.

Is this really a hobbyist collection you are building, or is it an investment portfolio. Contrary to what some other advisers would say, the two are most definitely not the same. Sure, a hobbyist will think of the value of their collection for purposes of their posterity when they die, but it is by no means treated by a hobbyist as an investment.

You may well get quite different answers from the same people just on the fact if the coin in question would be for purposes of an actual collection, for investment purposes, or for speculation. On speculation, PCGS is most definitely the way to go, as the current market shows that there is an amount of trust in PCGS for the sight-unseen market.

As a matter of investment, you must not only consider the fact of the cost to slab the coin (including shipment to and fro), but also the strength of your country's currency, inflation, as well as new comers to the market (DGS for example) and their possible, probable, and expected affect on the market. In this sense, PCGS does not necessarily look to be a reasonable choice at the moment for long term investment. Furthermore, with investment as well as speculation, you must also consider the intended market of sale.

There is so much more to consider when making numismatics an investment of any form, that the simple claim of "This is Best" or "That is Best" really is meaningless. Other conditions exist in the market that would necessarily raise or lower the price of a product like a PCGS slab.

It is so much easier and more enjoyable to simply buy what appeases your senses and pay only what you are willing to for it. That is collecting as a hobbyist.

I'm a collector, nothing I do is for an investment, I collect for fun and that is it, if I can make a few bucks here and there, as a investment, that is fine, BUT I'm GOING TO SPEND THAT MONEY ON COINS ANYWAY!!!!!

PCGS is a plus, for me, because it gives me greater retail purposes...
It is not like I'm buying PCGS slabs all day, without looking at the coins inside of them
When I buy a coin it is a long process, my recent purchase took me months to save up for, and I was searching for the same number of months
    1911 $2.5 PCGS AU58

Now, when it comes time to sell (I hope that time never comes) I'd rather have PCGS, just so I know, that I have a great chance for getting what I paid, or if value went up, close to what retail is at that time

What are you going to do when, in 10 years, the tables turn and NGC (or some other TPG) are pulling more $$ ?? It has happened before.

I have NGC coins too... LOL
My morgans are NGC, and my quarter eagles are PCGS :)

Agreed. DGS is a very strong up and coming TPG. Also, they are BIG on customer service. A member on a different forum had a problem and DGS more than compensated him. All TPG's make mistakes, it's how well they handle the mistake....that's what's important.

As already mentioned, the coins in the OP had problems and would have been "genuined" by NGC or PCGS. This is where DGS has another advantage, they will add the problem notation to the slab.

I must say, based on the Lincoln grading I've seen, DGS is spot on. I plan on having them do some grading for me as I trust them 100% based on what I've seen so far. In fact, they offer a lot of "bang for the buck" with the pop report and picture authentication.

What I liked about the DGS site was the straight-forward pricing menu.
It's very easy to figure out how much it's going to cost you to grade a coin.

The PCGS pricing menu is confusing..

I’m glad you started this thread T$, thank you, :)
Nothing personal but I will give DGS the benefit of the doubt and give them a try.

What I have read sounds good, also free pics for coins worth over $100.

I don’t like paying extra for designer labels.

I’m in it for the hobby and at this time I know little about grading and rely on people that do.

I'm glad I started this thread as well..
It showed me not to jump to quick, on conclusions about others (TPG's)
I'll give it some time, who knows maybe DGS will be number 1

I am with the rest of the group in that DGS has shown to be an excellent up and coming TPG. They are still fairly new and are off to a great start. It's true that they don't have the reputation of PCGS or NGC...yet, that will take time. But, if they continue to have the standards they have set so far they could find themselves listed in the same sentence as PCGS or NGC.

    I wouldn't have a problem buying a coin in a DGS slab.
