Well folks, I wanted to let you all know that If it weren't for coins I would be in a bad place. I lost my job for the first time in my life, about 2 1/2 months ago. I had no savings to fall back on and I an a single income family of 4. Well as much as I hate to say it, I have sold close to $4,000 of my coin collection which has made up alot of the gap and fed my family in this time of need. I am very fortunate to have put all these lovely coins back when I had the money or my kids would have gone hungry. Some of them I did well on others I lost and some broke even all in all I am doing OK on the whole deal. I hope to be working soon and back in the buying mode as I never intended on selling anything I collected. I, at this point, have all the older type coins and sold all my modern complete sets I constructed. Thank God for Coins!!! they have proven to be worth there weight in silver. I never thoght I would be in this position but I am very glad I chose such a cool hobby. Keep collecting!!
Sorry about your misfortune; glad you’re coping so well. Very clever ! You still have your sense of irony ! When I was a kid, I had a good-sized pop bottle cap collection. I got rid of it quite awhile back, but If I had had to sell that to eat I would have starved ! I wish I had started coin collecting when I was a kid.
Troy.. That a way to keep the ole chin up!! Sounds like you are a good man and a Great Father! You will survive and I am sure by the sound of things you will easily regain employment...did you ever think to take a loan on your coins so you would have the chance to buy em back? Good Luck to you.. RickieB
Coins can be a blessing in more than one way. Every now an then something has come up in my life that required those extra dollars and as much as I hate to a trip to the coin shop will provide the necessary funds to get me through. This is the very reason I collect in different ways. I am a coin collector and work to fill my sets but I am also always looking for items to stash back for a rainy day. There is a difference between my two collections. While I enjoy it all I know some have been purchased for resale should the need arise! Almost like having a savings account here at the house and I can convert it to cash within days. I have always done that and will continue to do so. If nothing else is available, when I have a few extra bucks, I just buy a little gold bullion or silver eagles. When need arises I turn to them! Works great!
Sorry you had to sell but gald you had the coins to sell! I have been going through my collecting taking out coins that don't fit in any more...I'm setting them in a few boxes I have and will one day sell them to get the 1909-S VDB--but if the need comes for something else like it happened to you...these would be the first to go. Speedy
In the same boat, Troyster. Thank God for those rolls of Silver Eagles I paid $120 for. At least I only have to feed me and the kitty cats!
Thanks for the stories. I started collecting coins again partly as a form of insurance policy against hard times and partly for the fun of it. Looking at a bank statement just doesn't have the same appeal as looking at the coins.
Sorry to hear of your misfortune, but your optimistic outlook will likely secure you another job before one of gloom and doom. I know exactly how you feel as I have lost three jobs in the past five years due to the economy and living here in the Rust belt. I recently obtained a pretty decent, secure job, and I hope you do as well.
