As posted in an earlier thread, I covet this note. I just think it is beautiful. The local coin shop has one of these in good condition (no rips, does not look wrinkled, they call it "fine") for $225. On another site, I was researching these and it says that in bad condition it should go for $350. De Orc, Lettow, Daggarjon, Rickie, and some of you other paper experts, is this a steal? Is this a price one can get elsewhere? Is this just a "good" price that may come up again? I can't afford this, mind you, but if this is just a really low price for this note I may bite the bullet. That sounds like a good price to me Now, pictures of course would help, but it would be a little weird to go into a shop, take pictures of his stuff, then leave... Tell me, do the notes appear to be better than these... The color, as I recall, is a little more brown than white, but it is in better shape (both colorwise and has less folds) than the one you posted that sold for $405. It is way better than the worst of the 3 you posted. I need to go in and take another look, but I saw the $225 and knew I couldn't afford it. But, when I looked at this other website that said $350 for a beat up one, I took notice...
Go to eBay's completed listings, and search $5 chief 1899. I don't know what you saw, so I can't say, you are getting a deal, but with what you are saying, it does sound good to me!
My plan was to save up for such a purchase (I've got 5 kids all at home with one going to college locally....I don't have a lot of extra $ to spend). If this is a "good" deal, then I probably won't splurge right now. If this is a "steal" of a deal, then I might go for it. I'll go look at it more closely and report and see what others say as well.

You know, I'm tempted to create a 'dummy account' and click Buy-it-now just to stick the idiot with the commission on it. Hell, you have to wait 7 days just to OPEN a non-paying bidder dispute and then give the buyer several days to respond to that. Hmmmm....would almost be worth it to use my main account since you can't ding buyers with negative feedback!
with a price that big you have to be pre-approved to bid on it. He puts these up on ebay all the time, he just doesn't want anyone buying his best specimens is all. Plus it's a way for him to advertise.
Yeah, I've put some of his items in my watchlist, just to see if they sell, always million dollar items...

it is real tough to say if the note you saw is worth the price tag or not. It is possible to get bargains, but shops are in business to make money, and rarely will let a note sell for alot less then its worth, unless they have a reason for doing so. Maybe they just want to get rid of it, and if that is the case, it might be gone when you get back. I would go to the PCGS grading guide. Also, go to heritage or even Ebay and print off some completed auctions with the prices realized showing on the page. If the dealer is understanding, he will help foster your desire to grade the note before you buy it... and might even help you. But be nice about it. Take a look at the note, try to grade it by the grading standards, and then if the note is a bargain based ont he recent realized prices, then grab it quick before someone else does say... where is this shop anyway?

My only advice to you is that if you like the note, then it should not matter to anyone else but you. My personal preferences are of course my own....as well as the decision to buy the notes I buy. I too have asked for opinions and realized that it was me who would be shucking out the $$$... If you like it, go for it...my personal mantra is nothing less than CHCU (except for some hard to find early stars)....it has cost a considerable amount, but will also reap the same in return.
