There was a rare U.S. dime sold at auction at Sotheby's a few years ago for 1.1 million dollars. It was one of a dozen or less dimes minted as special gifts for the heads of all the U.S. mints attending a symposium. It was a story covered in CNN Money, about 5 years ago. I have searched CNN Money and Sotheby's websites without any luck. It is extremely important to me to find out more info regarding this coin. Can anyone help me?

    Well welcome to cointalk...

I'm not sure that I know what you are talking about..
Looking at my 2009 redbook, the dime, that went closet to what you are talking about was a 1894 S PCGS PF65, which sold for $1,035,000 at heritage in January of 05...
    Mintage of 24...

That is all I know, I'm guessing I'm wrong though, and if I am, I'd like to know what you are talking about, once you find out... :D

If it really is extremely important, you can always drop your own dime.

I can't find results for the sale I'm looking for. What should I do?
If you cannot find the sale you want, please contact Sotheby's auction results line:

    Thanks

Thanks everyone, I actually did try emailing both Sotheby's and CNN, twice! I never even got a response from either. I guess I should try calling them.
What if these dimes were minted as private gifts to fellow bank or mint members and never meant for circulation, would that make a diffrence as to where one could research for general information?
OK, I spoke with my son who tells me they were minted for some sort of meeting of major bank presidents. I think you guys are on to something, the date of the coin sounds right and the date of sale sounds right
Here's the big question, when coins such as this sell at auction for big $, is their such a thing as a "lineage" that goes with the coin, which identifies the previous owners?
