Do you get funny looks when spending direct ship golden dollars? I get the weirdest look. My Thomas Jeffersons were not selling on ebay at all, and I needed to spend some of these things, so, over the last week, I've spent them at Walmart, restaurants, etc. People just look at me really strangely when I plunk them down. One 18 year old girl at a deli had to ask her manager if it was OK to take them? She said she had never seen them before?

Anyone else spending them and getting funny looks?

Well, of course you get funny looks, they have never seen a SAC, Presidential or Kennedy coins, ever....
I was suprised the other day in change, I got 10 kennedy halves, and 7 SAC/Presidential DOLLARS... At a gas station my dad went to... He bought them all, straight from the register, he asked me if there was anything special, and I said no, and we returned them to the bank.
Most people think the SAC dollar, is a peso or something... My mom even said we don't accept pesos here, at our last garage sale.. I just about died, it was so funny! :)
People who do not know much about coins, give us, the collectors an advantage...
They don't know about things like 1932 D and S quarters, or Key Dated Wheaties, so be it... Give us time to find them right!

Hey, I'll do some roll searching, and I'll tell if I find one...You got first dibs my friend, that is, if I EVER find one! LOL

Also, you live in Houston..So you are kinda far, but if you are anywhere in the area of Borene, or Fredericksburg, CHECK OUT THE ANTIQUE SHOPS...Coins, and the owners of shops, don't know anything about them :)

I did give one at a McDonalds the other day and the girl gave it back and said it was foregin money. I told her what it was and she still said no. I got the managers attention and told him and he was very nice and laughed and said I doubt she has ever seen one. He did tell me he would have a talk with the staff as they are high school kids who just don't understand coins. Ice

It actually isn't that bad around me, it seems like most people at least know what they are now. lol but a few weeks ago in a deli the total came to $3.50, so I paid with a $2 dollar bill, a sac, and a Kennedy half, needless to say the cashier thought I was crazy.:p

lol Sad that people are frustrated by someone spending legal tender coinage produced and distributed by the U.S. mint. I'd say they have the problem.

Wonder why kids my age, are so dumb about them... I guess it is just because they have no exposure to coins like I do...
My friends think they BARACK OBAMA STICKER coins are worth so much... I love saying the mintage numbers...and telling them, that I could make those myself... :) LOL

Yeah, people think the $2 bills, and everything else, are so RARE!
    Makes me chuckle...

I don't accept them nor do I ever attempt to spend any baby sized dollars. My last attempt was at a restaurant. I left several on the table as a tip. The waitress said rather loudly as I walked away "Sir, you left some of your kids play money on the table". That was the end of me ever wanting to use those dumb things again.

I don't receive or spend many of the baby dollar coins. However, I like to spend Kennedy halves, and frequently it gets some wide-eyed looks. I think people secretly like the larger coins. Perhaps they still harbor memories of the days when money was real.

I let my daughter put one it with a birthday gift of a friend (13 years old) and the friend thought it was the coolest thing ever because she had never seen one so shiney before.....

I've had, on the whole, great reactions to spending them! Most everyone accepts it, and about half of them view it as somewhat of a novelty, and I've gotten into some great conversations about them. And the kids in the neighborhood totally love them, and my kids enjoy the attention the get when they spend them in school.

I spent 10 of them at a parking lot, parking for a baseball game yesterday. The guy took it just like he was taking a $10-bill.

I don't spend them at restaurants or other stores very much, b/c I prefer to use my credit card, to get cash-back-rebate. But I use them in personal transactions (paying my $5 towards the office baby-shower, $5 from the flower vendor, kids' school lunch money, etc.)

And, in any event, I consider it my civic and numismatic duty to spend them and educate folks about them (especially after I order "direct ship" and get the rebate from my credit card!).

My rule of thumb: on those occasions when I get a "funny look", I think of it as an opportunity, not an annoyance.

Well, I'm surprised the kids like em', most kids are just kinda shunning the idea of coins in general, and they think it is nerdy and so on...
You see it as an opportunity....That is a good way to look at.. :)
Maybe, you could get somebody started in numismatics...Or maybe you just teach them on what a presidential dollar is... Either way, at least you are trying to make a difference :D

Well . . . in terms of collecting them, yeah, that might still be nerdy to them. But at least they are at the "what's that? A dollar? I've never seen that before. Oh coooool!" In fact, an 11-yo girl across the street came into my house with a dollar bill, she wanted to buy one from me!

Actually, I think that's a good way to look at most situations in life.

I'm tryin'! No luck so far (beyond my daughter collecting state quarters -- with her favorite one being the one that someone defaced with red nail polish!)

    Right! Thanks.

Yep, most of my friends think I'm stupid for spending lots of dough on a penny...
I'm waiting for the day, on of them finds a 55 DD, and I buy it from them for $20.... :D
