1916 Standing Liberty counterfeit? (pics added) Hi All, Just going through an estate find and I found a 1916 standing liberty quarter. Any ideas about how to detect if it is a fake? I've been told it most likely is, just cause you don't find them like that. But who knows!?! Any ideas? Thanks EDIT: PICS ADDED
If it's a fake it's a good one. I've only got a few well worn examples of this series and am not qualified to make a determination either way. The experts will be along shortly........
"I've been told it most likely is, just cause you don't find them like that." That was a dumb statement. As far as ths coin? No clue, but I'd send it in for slabbing. and: WELCOME!
I think it's authentic but I'd want to weigh it to be more comfortable with it. So stick it on a scale and tell us what it weighs. Ribbit
Well, this is a series that I've only just begun to study. But I don't see anything wrong with it. Of course I could be missing something. This is certainly one that needs to get authenticated by professionals.
Get it authenticated. It is a very valuable coin, if it proves to be real. The way the letters are worn on the reverse looks a little odd to me... but I think it's because i'm used to seeing the other reverse type, which has stars under the eagle and a different font.
If this is a real coin, it is best to send it in for grading, to NGC or PCGS, this is a very valuable example... But if you want to tell yourself, drag a magnet over it, and if it sticks.. FAKE Also, you should probably weigh the coin, although I'm not for certain what the weight should be, somebody else here should know
here you go: http://www.coinresource.com/guide/photograde/pg_25cStandingLiberty.htm SPECIFICATIONS: Diameter: 24.3 millimeters Weight: 6.25 grams Composition: .900 silver, .100 copper Edge: Reeded Net Weight: .18084 ounce pure silver
The rims and stars look good so does the wings and feathers. I think it's real and would recommend it be sent in for grading. Ice
If it passes the weight/diameter test, I'd send it to PCGS or ANACS; It looks cleaned or something, NGC might send it back in a bag. At least the other two services will slab it as authentic. I don't see anything about it that screams "fake!" but of course there are some very well-made fakes out there. I hope it's real, that would be a very cool find!
Does it seem weird that the design around the outside is almost razor sharp all the way around while the rest of it looks fairly worn? I've only bought a few of these and usually the dash/dot design is worn so easily that you can't even make out what it was, as it blends into the rim. It seems like that has stayed sharp while the rest of this coin has worn. Does that seem normal?
I looked at some in similar condition on Heritage, and couldn't find any glaring differences in the wear on the border or the major elements.
well, it has passed the magnet test.. I'm going to take it to a shop tomorrow to see what they can see... can't wait to find out! Thanks for the insight everyone! I've got tons of other coins.. maybe i can sort through them and find another gem to post
Hmmmm.... yeah, sumthin' doesn't seem right about this one. Can't put my finger on it, but you're right... the wear pattern doesn't seem natural. The rim seems much wider than normal. Weigh the thing. Measure it. Send it in to a TPG (NGC won't body bag it... they'll slab it "genuine" with an NCS label)... assuming it is genuine.
I don't see anything that would make me believe that it's fake. I would not say one way or another without seeing it in hand, but it looks authentic from what I can tell over the internet.
