If you can get an vf to au with a hole for the price of a ag, then for a collector, you are ahead. I have seen a few folks who make jewelry and punch holes in some nice coins, they really don't care about collector value. Kind of like the antique store I know that buys all the 90% that walks in and sends it to melt. They aren't collectors, and don't care about red book values, just melt.
Here are my holed coins so far. I try to get it with the hole in the top quarter, or third of the coin, but the exception to this is the clad quarter, which I don't imagine I'll find another one anytime soon.
Well there was the 1806 O-130 half dollar. The discovery specimen has a good sized hole in it and spent a fair amount of time hanging on a PCGS forum members vest before it was realized what it was. After it was identified it sold in the low to mid four figure level. I'm not sure if a second piece has been discovered yet.
A story I remember from my Great grandmother was larger coins were used to teeth babies. Hole was used to attach a string. I have several holed coins from her, one a nice 1832 bust half / holed. I wonder if it was used for that with my past relatives.
