As usual, your advice is well thought out. Actually, I am not in a hurry. I am trying to work out a long term strategy. One objective is to add coins to the collection that I am interested in. Morgans, for example. To fund these purchases I would sell coins I'm not so interested in. What I didn't know is the level of interest that other folks have for the coins I'm not so interested in. Based on the number of PM's I'm getting, it's more than I realize. I'm also of a mind that silver prices will head up in the next 12 months. The most likely outcome therefore is that I will end up selling some of these coins and keeping some to hedge if prices go up as I think they will.
See my last post. I'll probably sell some and keep some to hedge against a possible rise in silver prices in the next 12 months, which I think is likely..
I haven't finished the inventory yet. I started with the collectible quality coins first (which will be retained in the collection )and worked down to the lesser quality coins which is where I am now. Let's estimate no more than 10 rolls in each denomination (90% silver Dimes through Halves) with likely fewer rolls for the Washington quarters.
No one's cleaned me out because I haven't sold anything yet..and haven't yet decided what I will be selling...I'm still thinking about what the best long term strategy is..
it always seems that i cringe when i hear someone want to melt their coins because they are common. and i'm the one looking for these types for some in my collection. Im looking for Mercury and Washingtons but they have to have a certian look. it seems that at my local coin show the dealers have perfect coins that command good prices. Kinda rich for my blood for some of these. So im always looking on ebay. i always feel that when coins are melted you lose the integrity of the silver being 90% into ??? and what is the fineness of what you have melted anyways. i bet some people have melted junk into the silver trying to pass it off as better in my opinion. Snowman...I get your drift (no pun intended!)..I cringe about melt not because of the integrity of the silver when it's melted but because a coin has been irrevocably lost for future generations. Which is one big reason I probably won't sell anything for melt...although when you sell, you really have no idea what's going to happen to a coin..
