Can someone run down the keys and semi keys in the SLQ series. Also any underrated dates and your thinking on those. Thanks Much. I'm doing a key/semi-key 20th century type set and I'm thinking of SLQ's.
1916 is the key with only 52,000 minted. After that 27-S is a low mintage. 27-D a little higher, but still not really considered common.
27-S above VF-20, 17-P type one, 26-S come to mind. 27-S above VF-20, 17-P type one in mint state, 26-S in mint state come to mind. Tough tough series.
Keys: 1916, 1918/7S. Semi keys: 1927 S and all dates pre-1925. From 1925 to the end they recessed the date, earlier the date wore off in about 15 minutes. I have seen AU's with only 1/2 a date. Real better ones: 1923 S and 1921P. underrated: 1916 to 1924. (all of them, in most grades.)
I bought a dateless one and I have it soaking in vinegar to nick the date, but I think it is a 23S. Could take awhile though.
I doubt that soaking in vinegar will bring out the date, unless the date is obscured by crud that the vinegar can remove. I printed out the price list from Numismedia for grades G-MS60 (free!) and except for the stoppers (1916, 1918/17-s) the 'keys' would seem to be 1921, 1923-s,followed by 1927-s, 1919-d, 1919-s. For a type set, the 1917-type I is often found in high MS, with full head and details, at reasonable prices. I'm putting together a set in vf-xf (excluding the 2 stoppers) in an old Library of Coins album, and it's a lot of fun, and affordable fun at that!
