Yes, please tell the back story of why you searched there, how long you were there, what was the place (old house, beach, etc.), and if you peed a little bit when you first saw it (OK, you can keep that part a secret if you'd like).

 

This coinw was found in the common area of a very old cemetery. I was only there for about 10 minutes. After I found this one....I figured I'd done well enough for one day....and went on to get the milk and return to the house to see what it was. It was thicker than any large cent I'd ever dug, and at first I thought that maybe it was some kind of later token. Even encrusted, you could easily tell it was a Liberty Cap design.

I've studied much of the history of this little burg....and am convinced that there will be others....perhaps not as grand as this old girl....but this is the 2rd large cent I've dug this year. The other 2 were matron heads, one so badly damaged that no date can be discerned, and one that was holed...dated 1838.

We make our own luck to a certain extent. I found an old coin...because I was looking for old coins. Where I am fortunate...is to live in a town that was founded in 1781. Older finds are made in older places.

But for sure...the "metal detecting gods" were smiling on me last night.

This is much higher than G-VG details. More like XF-AU imo. Of course with the corrosion, it would probably net VG or so.

 

That is also my assessment of condition. This coin wasn't worn. When it went into the ground, it was very nearly new.

I think a lot of people are skeptical of dealers AND individuals selling coins. I won't be sending this to NCS .....because I don't care for slabbed coins, and I don't need their opinion as to grade. Its not going to be sold any time soon anyway, so I'm not worrying about "the next guy".

It's out of the ground...ph neutralized....and in a ring type airtite.

Wow! So true. Congrats on this find. That sounds like a really neat old town to hunt around.

I've got a detector too and my town was founded in 1828. One thing I've realized since I started is that the whole idea of detecting sounds more glamorous on a forum than it actually is. lol Of course, it's all worth it when you run across something like that!!

In reality, it takes work and time to do it. You try not to miss any areas. Then sometimes you debate on whether it's worth it to dig a certain type of signal or not. So you dig the plug. Whoops, just missed it. Dig next to that hole. Just missed. Dig next to that hole. Then finally realize you're probably chasing junk. Fill back in and keep going.

Then it comes down to available places to detect. I've got a lot of places picked out but who knows who owns them.
I've found quite a few coins with it but no silver and nothing earlier than the 1960s. Last weekend I found a 1990 nickel about 6" deep! I don't know how stuff gets buried so fast.

Detecting isn't for everybody. That's for sure.
