Hi everyone, new member here. I have a full sheet of Obsolete South Carolina fractional money and was wondering how to verify the authenticity of it and maybe get a estimated value. The sheet has 18 individual notes (6x3) with: 4 x 25 cent 6 x 50 cent 8 x 75 cent Each note is dated Feb 1 1963 and signed.
There are 2 versions of the fractional note, a Watermarked and an un watermarked. In Gem they each sell for around $50 each! I have never seen a whole sheet...you might want to send it in for grading. Here are the images of the water marked face and red back. Tell me they are not mounted on that backing!! Good luck... RickieB
You'd be surprised, I have heard of people cutting these up because the individual notes are an easier sell then the entire sheet... sad as that is. I have several similar sheets (not exactly the same) hanging up in my office here, they make great wall hangers. I would also send it in to be graded as it appears to be in great shape.
Thanks for all the replies. To answer some questions: RickieB No the sheet is not mounted to the backing. It looks like there is no water mark, but I will have to make a closer inspection when I get back home. And yes I have also seen the individual notes going for $50 a piece. LostDutchman I can not believe that people would cut these up, but I guess if you need some cash and don't want to sell the whole sheet? At this point I have no intention of selling this, just wanted to get a general idea of value. How would I go about having this graded? I know a little about coin grading in that coins can be mailed to services like PCGS and NGC, is there something similar for currency? And if so, who is reputable? Again, thanks for your help on this.
I thought the same thing when I first heard of this. Apparently some dealers think that it is easier to sell 20 $50 obsoletes then 1 $1000 piece.
not to hijack the thread but here are the 3 originals and one reproduction (top right) that I have in my office... I's still looking for another original one to fill the other frame. (i didn't realize how crooked they were till I took the pictures!! hahah)
Very very nice! I've seen plenty of the single notes here in SC through the years but never an uncut sheet. I did some searching online just now and found one other reference to an uncut sheets of these being sold: http://www.hapmoore.com/11.22.08/hma.coins.11.22.08.pdf (Search for the term "uncut" within the PDF) I dug around on this auction houses' website for prices realized but they are not available for this item.
LostDutchman: Very nice collection you have there. It seems like these pieces are not unheard of, just a bit rare. Skippy: Thanks a ton for the link to the auction, that is the exact same thing. Just wish they had prices. I might try sending them an e-mail on the off chance they have a record or someone might remember. General question for everyone, does PCGS Currency grade full sheets? Thanks again for the help.
