I have also found IKES at banks. If you ask they will give them to you at face value.

If they have them they will give them at face value...trouble is the banks don't see them very often. I worked at a bank for a year and when I was there I think I saw silver certificates only 3 or 4 times.

Tiny bit off subject but a friend of mine who know I collect coins, brought a coin in and ask me if I had ever seen one of these. It was a 1942 walking liberty half that he received in change from a convenience store. He had never seen one of these coins before. Unbelievable

Unbelievable he got the coin in his change? or Unbelievable that he had never seen one before?

    I think a little of both... :D

I would be in total shock if I get anything 90% silver in change, but especially a walker...
First Thing I would do is empty out my wallet, and say, give me every one you have

I don't think this is that odd. Before I started collecting coins I had never seen one of those before...I hadn't ever even see a Franklin. Many people who aren't interested in coins don't know anything about the older designs.

Nice find, I remember waiting for the bicentennial coins (1975 and 1976)
Some years back I picked up an Ike dollar at the store that appears to be gold plated on the obverse, like it was in a belt buckle or pendant or something. Also some more years back finding 40% halfs common. Not so common today.
    Keep looking there out there.
