I was looking through some circulated George Washington dollar coins and this shows up. At first I thought it was post mint damage as it looks really strange. It has a beveled edge instead of straight. You can clearly see the copper layer on the edge. What do you think????? First post the obverse and reverse, then a 2nd to post several of the edges....
Several angles of the edge....sorry about the yellow lighting. If you want, I could retake pics tomorrow with the sun. So, do you think this is a real one?
Weigh it and check the diameter. Is there any signs of skid marks on the 3rd side of the coin? The 3rd picture of the rim looks like it has been wheeled or buffed out. I cant say for sure with those pictures.
I found a website discussing this type of error and it looked very similar to the one I have. hmmmm, I'm more optimistic now.
Could be a legit no edge lettering dollar. hard to say for sure. The Schuler edge lettering machine does add a little form to the edge as the coin is run through the device. On the other hand, a buffing wheel could have been used to remove the lettering, also altering the rim. Its a tough call from the pictures. Thanks, Bill
Thanks Bill. The more I look at it now, the more I'm thinking that it is legit when I compared it with ones I saw online. I just don't know what to do with it.....Slab? Sell on ebay? don't know (how much does it cost to slab a coin anyway?)
