Upgrade for my type set as previous one was damaged. It's nothing spectacular, but it actually only cost me $20 more than what I sold my damaged one for; so definitely a success! Guess the grade of the newp!!:)

Yeah sorry. I've been experimenting with different lighting than I usually use. Here is another one of the reverse in my album. It's somewhat weakly struck.

    Very nice coin.

Suggestion on imaging coins in NGC slabs, or for that matter any slab that has the white insert.
Unless you manually control the exposure the white insert tends to cause the coin to darken.
Get a piece of dark grey or black, non-reflective paper, cut a hole in it about 1/8th inch larger than the coin all around.
Put that over the slab, then shoot your picture.
That means that most of the light you capture will be just from the coin.
The end result comes much closer to the real thing.

thanks for the input. Here is the grade. The coin went for $205.00, so I think I did ok. It's out of the slab now, and into the gold page of my type set.

That coin looks like an XF coin that the TPGs would grade high-end AU (55-58)....Mike

Xf, eh?? ouch. dem's fightin words...:pencil: lol, just kidding. Anyways, I think NGC is pretty close. I would give it an AU-55 to 58. The coin retains most of it's luster, even on some of the high points of the devices. There is some obvious circulation in the fields, and I believe the coin is weakly struck...but still a far cry from XF imo.

I can always count on leadfoot to ground me back to earth...

Eh xf does seem a little harsh, i collect liberty gold coins so im not as sure with the indian heads(though im starting to move into them) but the wear is only on the high points and it is fairly minimal. There is a good amount of natural luster. You might be mistaking the weaker strike of this coin for wear. However all of you are probably better graders then me so just my 2 cents.

Johnny, Please don't take my XF comment as a hit against the coin. It wasn't intended in that way at all and to the contrary, I like the coin and the grade (and the price!). Rather, it was a comment to how -- in my opinion -- the TPGs (over)grade this series...Mike

p.s. With all due respect, Lorgar, I am not mistaking a weak strike for wear. The XF comment was one made primarily on luster (or lack thereof) and not high-point wear/weak strike. While I could certainly be misinterpreting the amount of luster on the coin from the photos, I've seen enough AU gold dollars to feel confident in my assertions and my comments stand as written until I see a better photo depicting the luster or have a chance to examine the coin in-hand.

No offense taken at all Mike.:) I asked for an honest opinion, and that's exactly what you gave me. I really respect your input, and see you as one of the "stricter" graders on the forum. It puts things into perspective for me and helps me learn...so please continue to offer inputs!

It was amusing to me to see all these grades of 62 or 63; and then here comes Mike with an XF-40!!!:goofer:
