I just got a "mystery bag" ha-ha, of 20-30 ancient coins. I have some soaking in olive oil, but 4 I got semi-readable with a little sawed-off toothbrush action (lol sounds like a good movie title) for a snapshot.

Before I go on my merry way and try to ID these, IF anyone spots right off what they are please holler!

You should be able to figure out most of them. Use the site with the spreadsheets!

The third one may be a little bit tough: its a Byzantine decanummium, look under "Byzantine - Large Letters - I"

I find it hard to use these spreadsheets due to no pictures. For instance the Byzantium (3rd coin) I tried to ID that with the use of the spreadsheet. Best I could do is round it down, went to, Byzantine coin type: All other large letters and using the row filters, (I used left field - star) (right field - star) (mint mark - CON) it boiled down to 9 choices, (3) Justin I, Justin I/Justinian I, Justinian I, Justin II or (3) Maurice Tiberus. Next I looked at the way the bust faced. Straight on. That eliminates all but the 3 Maurice Tiberus. I can't read but 3 letters of the legend. They look like I, I, D... at least to me, thus eliminating all choices.

My guess: Maurice Tiberus 1 Decanummium

    yikes!
So the other 3 are not Byzantiums?

Pretty good! I think you got it about right, but I have to check. The other three are late Romans, Constantinian and Valentinian dynasties.

For the first coin pictured, I found a very similar coin, however insted of a star over A, mine is a star over B. Both mint marks are barely legible, with a blob S showing.

Is this coin a: Valentian I AE3 Thessalonica?

The more I try and "attribute"? these old coins the more hooked I get. :)

I couldn't find any values for the Byzantiun. There's a similar one on eBay for $25, I can assume mine is worth about $12?

Thanks for fueling the fire Ardatirion and De Orc .. :p
