http://www.davidlawrence.com/invent...024dabc55-28C53581-2BFC-0A80-3024AF47BAEA1EB1 just saying.... it may be a while before you have another chance to get some of these dates. It is not like you can just pick these up on Ebay.
I've got a set of War Nickels with the FS designation. They run from MS-64FS to MS-66FS. The problem with the FS designation is the definition. NGC starts using it at 5 steps. PCGS does the same, I think. ANACS at least tells you on the label how many, 5, 5.5 or 6. And like the FBL thread I just started, the FS designation has two criteria: - the strike must have the steps present ALL the way across. - the steps cannot be interrupted by nicks such as bag marks. I assume a circulated nickel can have the FS designation, but I've never seen one labeled that way.
the pics on that website are pretty good, you should be able to assess the steps. Some of those dates in the 1950's are just super rare and they are available at this auction. for example: http://www.davidlawrence.com/auctio...8d1886b91-2D36B76A-2BFC-0A80-302B77CE94B807BC a 1954 s designated FS by PCGS
Like who? The most desirable strike on the steps is alway worth more and is why they are most desirable.
There are really not many FS examples of many of those dates. If FS'ers are your thing that auction is pretty cool. As for the mosey side of it, they will probably be worth a lot more in 5 years, I mean no one is going to pop up with a roll of these.
My two favorite FS nickels are the 1994 and 1997 Matte Finish ones in the coin and currency sets. If I could find a way to take a pic that is zoomed in on those steps I would, but all previous attempts did not go welll. I don't know, just something about them.
Hey Joe, let me help you out. The US Mint finally learned how to strike a Jefferson Nickel and I agree those steps do look good. However, I am still a sucker for an early FS Jefferson. This coin is a supremely lustrous 1940-D NGC MS67 FS (6) from the legendary Compradore Collection. I like the FS nickels from the Philly collection, but some of the prices are just insane. For my money, the coin has to have incredible toning along with the FS designation to get my attention.
just curious, has anyone ever completed a set of these? just curious, has anyone ever completed a set of these? I was under the impression that a couple of the dates did not exist??
