Hello.. I wondered if you could give me an estimate of the value of this Indian Head Gold Coin. Also, what is the difference between type O, and type D etc? How do i determine this? I would appreciate a quick reply on this. Yours sincerely
oh say anywhere from $340-380 based on condition, which I really can't tell from here. The other "types" D O S are mint marks from Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. It would be on the reverse of the coin at the edge in between the 7 and 8 o'clock position just out at the edge of the branch, if would be a D O or S or not there which signifies a Phildelphia minted coin. Based on your pics, I can't see one.
Just a note - the '09 $5 gold is heavily counterfeited; if buying, be sure you know your seller; if the coin is yours, stop by a coin shop and have it verified as genuine. A larger pic would enable some of CT's experts a chance to determine validity.
Just wondering if the color of your picture is the actual color of the coin in hand , or is it different ? rzage
I dont really have the coin, someone offered it to me, to buy. Its a direct scan, so i would assume its the actual color.
Like Jim pointed out - the $2 1/2 & $5 Indians are heavily counterfeited. I would not recommend buying one raw unless you know the seller and there is a return policy or if you can inspect the coin in-hand AND you know how do authenticate it. Good luck.
Please take some larger pictures so we can verify it's authenticity... to an extent. There are some very typical signs of fake gold that you can look for, but there are also infamous faked dies that some people will instantly recognize. Obvious things would be tool marks, especially around letters, missing details... basically anything that doesn't look 'right'. http://coinfacts.com/ will have pictures of certified 1909 eagles, just select the denomination and take a look for yourself if you need any reference.
Well I would never buy a coin like this RAW, and don't recommend it to anyone... As everyone says, they are counters afoot, and the color is a little, pinkish on yours... If you want one of these coins, you can get one graded by PCGS for a fair price on eBay, or heritage, just depending on your budget...
