Hi ! World Coin Experts; Here is a coin I just came across and I have no idea what country it is from or if it has any value. In fact I am not to sure it's a real coin as I see no denomination on it. Take a look at the pictures and tell me what you think. Much appreciation. Dave
I suck at attributing Greeks, so I wont be able to do that for you.. It is however, an ancient Greek coin, sometime in the B.C. era. If it is real, it has some value. Any idea on the size/weight? I can at least tell you what the denomination is...who knows, that may even inspire me enough to attempt to attribute it..lol stainless
IDK about that. I think it may be fake, I am just not going to come out and say it with certainty, as I have been wrong on the forum before about fakes..lol. The Legend is what strikes me, if anyone is wondering..I think modern cast. But like I said, Greeks aren't my thing...so... stainless
That was my thought and I know absolutely nothing about ancients. Just appears funny to me. And that conclusion is based on......my uneducated opinion. :smile
LOL..I should note, Greeks do tend to have this style of legend occasionaly..which is what is giving me a hard time. stainless
I will try to weigh it and do some measurements. In the mean time, can you suggest how I can determine if the coin is real or fake ?
Depending on the size, a tetra, octa, or dekadrachm from the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom. Fake, unfortunately. Genuine ones are quite valuable, easily several hundred dollars.
Hi ! Stainless, I'm not sure if these dimensions are right, but as near as I can determine, The coin is 1.250 wide and 1.125 tall. It is about .1250 thick (Puffed out face). It weighs 0.5 oz or 14 G.
Very close Diocletian, but these show the reverse image with the man holding a club in his left hand. My coin has him holding a flag or banner.
Looks like a cast fake of a Demetrios I Tetradrachm similar to these... http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=103528 http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=84791 Never seen a real one with any kind of legend on the obverse either, but I haven't seen a lot of the real thing not really in my interest area.
I'm lazy...try to write the size in millimeters. Besides that, Ardy and Anemic confirmed my suspicion...it is a fake. stainless
Hi ! Stainless, The 1.125 Tall figure = 28.575 mm The 1.250 Wide figure = 31.75 mm and the .1250 thickness = 3.175 mm. No one has been able to find the exact picture of the coin I posted.
Well if it'll make you feel better here's a couple at Dr. Ilya Prokopov's Fake Ancient Coin Reports on Forvm... http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?pos=-2900 http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?pos=-2575
I think you found it. Now, how do I find out if the coin is actually real or fake ? Is there a slabber who will evalute the coin ?
Read this thread and you'll find that answer. Yes, there are people who can authenticate it for you, but why pay $25 when we already told you. stainless
If you really want to spend the money you can send it to someone like David Sear, much better than a slabber... http://www.davidrsear.com/certification.html
