Well, the results are in! VF Details/Authentic/Scratched I bought this coin at an auction last year. I just wanted it because I had never had a coin in the 1700's and the price was decent. Soon after buying it, I had questions about it being authentic and I posted it on a few sites to get feedback. Pretty much all of it was positive as far as the coin being authentic, but obviously cleaned at some point. So last weekend when I was up at the Central States show, I submitted it to NCS for authentication and "cleaning" or as they say "restoration". I submitted two coins, but this is technically my first coin ever submitted. I just received an email last night with the results and the charges posted on my bank account. I have to say I was surprised because it was half of what I expected. I don't have the coin in hand, but I should by Monday (hopefully). Here are the "before" pics. I am really looking forward to seeing the coin in hand to see what NCS has done to it. Lets see if they can "improve" the look of the coin. Pics of the after results will be posted when it comes in. Keep us posted on this. The discoloring on the reverse is interesting -- like a kind of flaking or residue in some low spots. Nice photos.
The NCS guy I spoke with at the table looked at it for a minute or two and said that it was no problem that he felt he could remove the stuff on the reverse. You could tell that the coin has been cleaned at one time, but fortunately not harshly. The scratch that they are referring to on the label is on the obverse of the coin. You can see it in my pics, but it is much more obvious in hand. I have never seen a product from NCS so this will be interesting to see the results. As far as it being in sea water. Could have been. Who knows. Maybe NCS will give me a detailed report of what they find. The email that I got was not detailed.
I think the coin looks good as it is. That bit of discoloring doesn't distract me from enjoying the design.
Well here it is gang. Finally had a chance to photograph it. They didn't "conserve" it as expected, but realistically I shouldn't have expected much. Every coin that i have ever seen before and after has never really looked better afterward. This one looks nearly the same as the before pics. The guy at the NCS table really felt like he could remove the gunk on the reverse. Not a big deal. The most imporatant thing was that I had the coin authenticated. Now it validates my purchase.
