What is the circular mark on Jefferson's forehead. This is a gorgeous full step MS67 1940-D, but what is that on his head. If PCGS graded the coin MS67, they must feel that is was done during the minting process or is a die variety. I don't know of any die variety for the 1940-D. So, what is that circle on Jeff's forehead? http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=29053&Lot_No=24104#photo
My guess is watermark or hit or on/in the plastic. My guess is watermark or hit or on/in the plastic.
I've never seen that before. The edges appear to be raised. I would guess that some tiny circular piece of garbage either got on the die or was imprinted into the die through some type of clash mechanism (though not a true clash). How very strange.
Not sure just what it means, but they changed the pic at Heritage. The circle is still there, but not so obvious.
