I found this in my backyard about 10 inches in the dirt. My house was built in about 1875 and we are the 2nd owners. So it is safe to assume that this fell in the dirt and has been untouched until we found it in 2003. I have not attempted to clean it or alter it. You can also view it at http://www.valuescripts.net/tails1851.JPG & http://www.valuescripts.net/head1851.JPG.
I tried to find That penny in about that condition and they seem to go for about 8-10 Dollars on E-Bay. Hope this helps. http://cgi.ebay.com/1851-Large-Cent_W0QQitemZ200337355054QQihZ010QQcategoryZ11950QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Kool!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a nice find...It is fun to find coins...Congrats....keep looking......
Don't forget there is the 1851/81 "flavor" for this year. I can't tell from the photo, but you never know! I cherrypicked a VF condition one years ago!
what does the 1851/81 "flavor" refer to? This is exciting! I am not a collector, but I did know not to alter or even attempt to clean this beauty in any way. What would it grade at?:hail:
Were you just digging in your backyard when you found the coin or were you metal detecting for coins?
so what does that mean....the crack between 5&1? I found this coin when i was transplanting a hosta right in the middle of my back yard. Bare hands, no metal detector...I was thrilled! We live along the bluffs of the Mississippi river in the second oldest town in Minnesota. It was also the county seat, and the home of the Spiral Bridge. Downtown is within a block of my house, and I always pictured that coin dropping out of some cowboys pocket right after he left the bank, where it sat until I found it. Can anyone grade it at this sight?
It means there is an error variety for the 1851's in which the date numerals were originally inverted (upside down) during minting. But then was fixed with an overdate correction press. There will be a faint "8" under the 5 in the date and a serif point from a "1" under the last 1. http://www.stacks.com/lotdetail.aspx?lrid=AN00021410 A little hard to see the faint 8 in these pictures but the erroneous 1 serif is clearly seen in the pictures under the corrected last 1.
so what does all of that mean? Does it help or hurt? you guys have been great... and I thank you all!:hail:
It all helps, I see the die crack and that is pretty cool, to some it would be worth more money just because it has that line. If it has the 81 thing they are describing than it is what's called a variety, and those can be very very highly desired amongst collectors once again making it worth more money. So everything they are mentioning is good ;-)
I'm really smiling now. And I am going to put up a little better pics so take another look you guys:bow:!
