I ordered the Perth Mint "Golden Age of Piracy" set at the beginning of April and just recieved them. What beauties! My first from the mint and first colorized. Had to share a little of my excitement. I never expected to actually get them because they were supposedly sold out in late February or early March and only 1500 were made. Mine is #1469. Whew! I'm new to coin collecting and still trying to find my niche. So I'm trying a few different things to find out what I like best. This forum has been a great resource for me so thanks to all for that.
Great looking set, reminds me of a Cuban set that was out a few years ago 2 of which had Mary Read and Anne Bonny on companions of Calico Jack LOL They were also a lot more colorful if I remember rightly.
Why was I able to put a set in my shopping cart if they are sold out hmmm ... was there another pressing? Curious.. beautiful coins.
You remember rightly. And Anne Bonny and Mary Read were topless on those coins. Which might be an added plus for some. See the Cuba 10 and 50 pesos from 1995. They also featured Henry Morgan, Captain Kidd as well s Blackbeard.
Ummm. More pirate coins, you say. I'm interested. I found a picture of one, and it was quite attractive. Do you (or anyone) know if the colorization is as nice as the Perth Mint coins, or maybe just a paper sticker? EDIT: I think I found the answer to my question. Here's what I found in an article regarding Cuban coins: "Cuba has joined many other countries in enameling coins; they feature dolphins, groupers, rays, swordfishes and others that are found in the Caribbean, along with pelicans, ducks, butterflies, and flamingoes that are found in Cuba. They also started a series of enameled famous aircraft; so far we have only the Albatross — a German aircraft from WW I. They have a series of coins minted in England and dealing with famous pirates of the Caribbean. A photo is printed on paper, then affixed to the reverse. These appear on the 1, 10, and 50 peso pieces."
The Somali Pirates were losers Comparing this commemorative to the Somali pirates is about the same as asking if the fat kid in my back yard that hit a ball over my fence is going to get the same recognition as Babe Ruth
Future sets? Perhaps a commemorative to remember those with black boxes pirating cable signals. Then maybe a " Pirates of Wall Street" series with coins that disappear as you open the coin box.
Hey, a pirate is a pirate... Do you think Blackbeard and the boys were all quaint little characters like Jack Sparrow? If anything they were worse then the modern day pirates, as I haven't heard any reports of the Somali's nailing anyone's guts to a mast yet.
Anyone know of any other pirate series or singles, colored or not, other than the aforementioned 1995 Cuban series (with the stick-on paper images)?
The point is that they are being commemorated for the Large scale effect that they had on the known world of their day. There were 100's to 1000's of pirates in their day too, but their names are remembered for the same reason that they are commemorated. You may argue that they weren't nice men, but they did have a Huge impact and you might be surprised by some values that they did stand for in their stories if you decide to read their tales “ In an honest Service, there is thin Commons, low Wages, and hard Labour; in this, Plenty and Satiety, Pleasure and Ease, Liberty and Power; and who would not balance Creditor on this Side, when all the Hazard that is run for it, at worst, is only a sower Look or two at choaking. No, a merry Life and a short one shall be my Motto ” —Pirate Captain Bartholomew Roberts Also Piracy was the only time Democracy ever existed on the Seas, and still holds true hundreds of years later to this day, as partialy stated above in Captain Roberts Quote
