    Howdy peeps, :)

I have an interesting coin in my possession. It's a 1907 Quarter Anna but I thought they were suppose to be copper and the one I have is either nickel or silver or some combination thereof. :kewl: Does anyone know anything about this coin? :hail:

    Ribbit :)

Ps: Where is Spock when you need him? :goof:

    Somebody called the King? :D

    What a coin !!!!!

Ladies and gentleman i am glad that even though Toad has this coin in his possession he is so humble about it. This is a true rarity (the man). some people start acting obnoxious when they find a common trinket but true genius always stands apart.

Well done my friend. every one claims to have a rare edward coin some even make ridiculous statements but you have it. this is probably a nickel pattern that somehow slipped into circulation. magnificent in any condition :)

congrats i suggest a NCS plastic around it :D

LMK if you have any other questions :)

If it is Ni then it is a pattern. If silver then regular OMS restrike. It seems circulated, so I feel it is a Ni one intended as a pattern for new coinage-- note that in 1907 the composition of the 1/4 anna was changed.

This might have made it out of the mint since some mint employee might have wanted to spend it! :)

There are stories about 1861 patterns when they made it out of the mint since the employees wanted to spend these.

About the rarity part, very rare!

    Well done!

BTW I think you should be able to get it in a TPG regular plastic... much more marketable then! :)

Please also check out a similar transitional year possible pattern I posted for the Republic of India-- 1962 naya paisa-- when the metal composition changed. This one too seems to have made it out of the mint and is circulated.

Your coin is definitely more scarcer than my Republic one.

I am not sure if it is nickel or silver but it weighs 4.8 grams, if that clarifies things? :goofer: I chanced upon this so you might say I got lucky. ;)

    Ribbit :)

The weight seems about right! If silver then it would have been slightly more than this. I will put my money on this being Ni and a pattern for new metal.

A correction to my earlier statement-- the transitional year in this case was 1906 and not 1907 as I earlier mentioned, but they might still have been experimenting. In light of little documentation on these we can only speculate.

you sure did and its not coz of the coin its the knighthood ;). you already walk on water just make sure the flies dont leave the swamp and of course dont waste money trying to send it to ngc without first sending it to NCS. :D

after it comes back from NCS i might decide to put this coin under royal protection ;)

option A - he was part of the rich collectors club that these coins were made for, apparently coins in india were not made for circulation but for rich american collectors

option B - he woke up one morning and found the coins in his home while doing roll searching

option C - he was the mint employee who used to sit idle and make such coins so he has a whole bunch of them

option D - its an imaginary coin

option E - its on loan from the imperial collection

Option F - none of the above :D

So Mumba you want to play who wants to be a numismatics or what? :D

with HRH approval, may i add
Option G: It was gifted by HRH as a token to "Sir" toad for his knighthood :)

On a serious note i always marvel of how these ol coins travel outside india, with so many restrictions and corrupt custom officials who are ever ready to seize everything..

Quite possibly in pocket change if it did make its way into circulation, and dont forget at the time it was minted you would have had a lot of movement of Imperial troops in and out of the country etc

the treasury has run dry these days and we have some new monsters in the kingdom otherwise i would have but sir toad has been brave all these years fighting all the creatures in the swamp.

you answered your own question - corruption and some corrupt Indians who travelled overseas after plundering the heritage of statues, art, etc. a lot of coins were also part of that plunder. of course a big bounty was the result. look at what happened to tipu sultans dress
