I think i found an ACTUAL spooned cent! the frm is flat not rounded like a dryer coin and the faces of the coin show no evidence of the rim rolling back in on it or any damage to the details. I guess there actually is someone out there crazy enough to spoon a cent! the silver look to the obv. is due to lighting

I have found many spooned cents in circulation, and throw them right back yes there out there the crazies and spooned cents do exsist.

The point was that the majority of what people post as "spooned" are actually just damaged by a commercial clothes dryer. this one is actually spooned, the first I have seen that is NOT from a dryer.

Not to change subjects but I got four rolls of new 2009 D lincolns from the bank yesterday, yahoo. They were the sausage roll type in clear plastic. In the middle of one roll I could see that one of the coins had a cent with brown rims. To my surprise it was a 1999 D.

Here's the obverse and reverse. The best I can do for the rim is in the first photo above.

It has the potential to be the first one I've ever seen:) I still can't be sure that it wasn't fooled with in another way but......it is possible:) I can now say that with one possible exception being this coin that nobody spoons cents:)

We now have a set of photos to show the difference!

I can think of one other scenario that could account for this look. So I am not giving it the "slam dunk" yet:)

If supposedly someone was bored enough to spoon a cent, they could equally have been bored enough to put the coin in a vice and turn the screw, then open again and repeat the procedure until the coin has been circumvented a few times.

It would have the same result. If another possibility exists then I can't say with 100% certainty just how this coin was mutilated.

The picture of the edge at the beginning of the thread shows an area of raised metal that probably wouldn't be there if the coin were truly "spooned". In a vice , however, an imperfection in the vice could act like a die and transfer an impression on to the edge of the coin.

The more I think about it, the more I like the vice scenario.

It still has some potential though:)

    Thanks,
    Bill

That raised section is actually from damage caused after it was returned to circulation.

I gotta ask, Ziggy, how could you possibly determine that unless you followed the coin through its path of circulation from the moment it was tampered with? The raised "thingy" could have been created by my scenario just as easily.

Things have to be a slam dunk before you can call something, something:)

What you can't see in the photo are the scrape marks leading up to that mark. these don't show up anywhere else on the rim.
