I was looking on fleabay and saw a coin I like.... 1911 barber dime The question is about the grading service CCGS (cameo coin grading service) I have never heard of a TPG by this name. The coin graded MS65 and looks nice but again I want info on CCGS ....thanks guys
Edinmem, You will probably hear this a few times more but...buy the coin not the slab - If you like the coin, go for it. That Grading service is not a big time service. I would not pay a premium for anything they grade. Freddypm
Agreed, most of the slabbers you see out there are way overgrading coins. Only the big names (PCGS and NGC) and really trustworthy. ANACS does a pretty good job but in recent years their quality has declined. I personally wouldn't pay a premium for any of them. Look at the coin and decide the grade for yourself and pay accordingly. But, PCGS and NGC are typically pretty accurate (ANACS is OK). As for the rest...they are usually well over graded.
I think since ANACS changed hands a year or so ago they are trying to re-establish their image. IMO they are being VERY tough with their grading. And don't ignore coins in ICG slabs. They seem to do a good job. Also take a careful look at coins in SEGS and PCI holders. They were more erratic with their grading but you can find some good ones from them. At least they made a legitimate try at grading.
Can you provide pictures? Then we can tell you if the grade is accurate. It's by no means a major TPG, but really a lot of people on this forum could grade as well as pro coin graders (okay maybe not as fast, but you get the point).
Several years ago, PCGS and NGC were considered the top 2 equals with ANACS coming in third and ICG fourth. It was my understanding that there was a major change in people (many of the IGC people went to ANACS) a few years ago when it changed hands and as a result their quality declined a bit to where everyone felt ICGs had been. But, with ICG losing those people it also declined. Maybe things have changed...but my understanding is the older ANACS and ICG were decent but in the last few years both had declined from what they once were. But, maybe that has changed. Either way...I don't trust any of them (PCGS or NGC) 100%. Grading is so subjective that you have to look at each coin and decide if it's graded right or not. Then, pay accordingly. I know CAC has tried to take some of the purchasers knowledge out of the equation...but IMHO you still have to make the final grade. I have heard some pretty good things about them but have not seen any of their coins in hand. They are a pretty new TPG so time will tell.
I'm sure I've posted this before. ANACS Buffalo Nickels can be great buys at times. I've looked at hundreds of slabbed Buffal Nickels, and they appear to have been really tough grading them in the older slabs. I've also gotten lucky in other types of coins a few times with PCI. I have seriously considered sending my Lincoln Uncirculated Dollar to Dominion, I'm hoping someday they become one of the top TPG companies. I think right now they are about the cheapest also.
That's because they are NOT a TPG. A TPG is a legitimate business. CCGS is not a legitimate business. It's nothing more than an individual buying plastic cases, putting in the coins, and attaching a label with an inflated grade. Did you try googling "cameo coin grading service" ? They don't exist. This coin is worse than a raw coin... it's a hustle. Treat it with MORE caution than you would a raw coin. At least with a raw coin, the seller is up front. "Here it is. It's raw. My opinion on grade is -x-. You form you're own opinion and we'll negotiate a price". Of course, almost all those coins are overgraded. But at least raw coin sellers don't create a facade of a "legitimate" TPG. CCGS is a facade and nothing more.
With TPG if you haven't seen or heard of them a lot then they are more than likely what you describe.
There have been at least four different firms that have used the initials CCGS. I don't believe any of the four I know of used the name Cameo Coin Grading Service. If so that would be a fifth one. Just went and found it and I believe that is a new one for me. Not too many of them use Coin World shells anymore.
