Here are two coppers from B&M auctions: the 1795 large cent is the common variety S-76b rated R-1. It has a few ticks on the bust, but overall pleasant. It's from the Bebee collection. I forget now which variety the 1797 half cent is. It has a nice obverse with wide rims. I agree with B &M's grade on the S-76b, but not quite with the grade they assigned the 1797 half cent. See what you guys think! Thanks, Eduard
Thanks H.T! So you would you go as high as F12/15 on the C-2? (and thanks for the attribution btw). B&M agrees, but their grade seems a little high to me due to weakness on the reverse. Interestingly, of this variety CQR says: "Centered bust, planchets usually not nice. Nice color and surfaces rate a premium..." The planchet quality on this example is quite good - nice and smooth. So this compensates for the weakness on the reverse. The S-97b was graded F12. I agree with that. regards, Eduard
The LC's were prone for weak strikes so I try to take that into account when grading. There are Connecticuts that have minting problems that if you don't know about it, you'd miss the grade by 10 to 20 points. Ribbit
